Synopsis

Former tennis player Easton Bradbury is trying to be the best teacher she can be, trying to reach her bored students and trying to forget her past. What brought her to this stage in her life isn’t important. She can’t let it be. But now one parent-teacher meeting may be her undoing…

Meeting Tyler Marek for the first time makes it easy for Easton to see why his son is having trouble in school. The man knows how to manage businesses and wealth, not a teenage boy. Or a young teacher, for that matter, though he tries to. And yet…there is something about him that draws Easton in—a hint of vulnerability, a flash of attraction, a spark that might burn.

Synopsis

Erika

I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession.

His name is Michael Crist.

My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He is handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.

But I noticed him.

I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away.

Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped watching Michael. He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my head anymore.

Because he’s finally noticed me.

Michael
Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika.

My brother’s girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our dinner table. She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close. I can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven’t had her body, I know that I have her mind. That’s all I really want anyway.

Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college.

In my city.

Unprotected.

The opportunity is too good to be true as well as the timing. Because you see, three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now they’re out.

We’ve waited. We’ve been patient. And now every last one of her nightmares will come true.

Excerpt

I turned and stalked off, taking a left down the hallway toward the elevator. The doors opened as soon as I pushed the button, and I stepped inside, trying to calm my racing heart.

They still intimidated me.

And excited me. And challenged me. And knotted me up.

I’d kind of wanted to go to a party but not with them.

The doors started closing, but just then a hand shot into the elevator, and I jumped, seeing the doors re-open. I sucked in a breath, staring wide-eyed as Michael reached in, grabbed my shirt by the collar with one hand, and pulled me out.

“Michael!” I shouted.

I stumbled into him, and before I knew what was happening, he grabbed my wrists and locked them behind my back, walking into me and forcing me backward, back down the hall toward the kitchen.

“Let me go!” I demanded, my lips brushing the tip of his chin.

“I don’t know, guys,” he teased over my head, “she still seems pretty fucking easy to push around. What do you think?”

Laughter greeted me as he forced me back into the living area.

Every muscle in my body was on fire, and the tips of my toes kept getting caught under his sneakers.

I twisted my body, trying to break his hold. “What the hell are you doing?”

I pushed against his chest and jerked my body to the left, tearing out of his hold with every muscle I could muster.

I stumbled, losing my balance, and fell backward, crashing to the floor. Pain shot through my ass, running down my legs as the fall knocked the wind out me.

Shit!

Shooting my hands behind me, I pushed myself up and bent my knees, looking up at him as he advanced.

He stalked over and then stopped, towering over me.  I immediately moved my hands and feet, crawling backward, away from him.

But then I felt something at my back, and I halted. I twisted my head, seeing a dark pant leg, and I didn’t know if it was Damon, Will, or Kai, but it didn’t matter. I was closed in.

Oh, no. I slowly raised my eyes, seeing Michael’s lips tilt in a devious smile. I stopped breathing, seeing him lower his body to the floor, planting his knees between my bent legs, and his hands at my sides.

My neck arched back as his face hovered over mine, but I tried to keep myself up as much as possible, no matter how close his body got.

“I thought you were one of us,” his whispered, his breath caressing my lips. “I thought you could play.”

I stilled, staring into his eyes.

You’re one of us now. Will had said that to me on that night so long ago.

Michael’s amber eyes searched mine and then dropped to my mouth, his breathing growing heavy as he stared at me like he was about to take a bite.

I wanted to cry. What the hell was going on?

Three years ago was nearly the happiest night of my life, and it quickly became the worst. And ever since then, Michael not only acted as if I didn’t exist, but also, at times, as if he wished I didn’t.

Now the guys were free, and they were all back together again. What did I have to do with any of this? What did he want with me?

“I don’t know this game,” I told him, barely audible.

He stared into my eyes, thinning his own as if studying me. “All you need to know,” he finally answered, “is that you can’t tap out.”

Synopsis

From the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Bully, Until You, Rival, and Falling Away comes the sizzling

conclusion to the Fall Away series.

The tables have turned. Now I have the power—and it’s his turn to beg…

Everyone wants to be me.

Maybe it’s the sway of my skirt or the way I flip my hair, but I don’t care. Even though their attention is the last thing I crave, I just can’t stop. I dominate the track, the speed rattles my bones, and the wind and the crowd screams my name.

I’m her. The girl driver. The queen of the race. And I’m surviving—something he thought I’d never do.

They all talk about him. Did you see Jared Trent on T.V? What did you think of his last race, Tate? When is he coming back to town, Tate?

But I refuse to care too much.

Because when Jared does come home, I won’t be here.

Tatum Brandt is gone. I’m someone new.

Grace Review

“Again.”

It’s a simple word, but it means so much in the context of this story and sums up the relationship between Tate and Jared. It also comes at a very memorable time in the book.

I know there were a range of responses when fans of this series read the preview of this book at the end of Falling Away. Heartbreak, fear, anger. I personally only skimmed the preview, already knowing the gist of what happened and knowing my heart wasn’t ready for it. And I’ll be honest, I was VERY nervous to start reading these, while overeager at the same time.

Let me tell you, this book is all that and a bag of chips. While reading, I held my kindle in a death grip, fanned myself, laughed, and even cried. This hit all of my emotions and left me feeling completely satisfied. All of the anguish was worth it.

Although it pained me to hear of this couple’s breakup for _____ period of time (yeah, I’m not giving that spoiler away), I wasn’t completely floored. If you think about it, these two got together as teenagers and you’d have to expect some growing pains along the way.

With alternate POVs, we get both sides of the pre- and post-breakup. Knowing the reasons and reactions of both characters cleared up a lot of concerns, and created some new ones. One thing is clear, the lack of communication on both of their parts only made things worse.

I hated her.  I wanted to hate her.  Why did I still want her?
Fuck!

What was strange was based on the preview, and Jared’s past history, I would expected my anger to center with him. But I actually wavered back and forth as to who I directed my anger towards and who got my sympathy. Oddly enough, it was their friends and family who seemed to work harder to resolve the issues between the two. I loved Madoc in this book! He verbally gives Jared a much needed kick in the ass.

Madoc let out a bitter laugh.  “Take off your pants.”
I popped my head up.  “Why?”
“Because I want to see what a man with a pussy looks like.”

Then Jared’s Mom gives the follow thru kick. Seems she had the ability to be a good mom after all, when not drowning herself in booze.

“A man who stand in front of a woman does nothing more than block her view.  She needs a man standing next to her, so grow up.”

Can I get an “amen”?!

It is worth mentioning that a lot of people were angered by this mere idea of his book. Why did the author ruin a good thing?! How dare she! But here’s something to consider. Why not take something good, and make it better? Did Jared and Tate handle things perfectly? Hell no! But they were young and selfish. The Jared you know from the previous books is so different than the Jared you come to know in this story. He has found his purpose and come to some painful realizations of what is still missing in his life. The quest to make things right show how far along he has come, and with the previously mentioned advice of others, he takes the proper steps to make things last, forever.

Tate and Jared have always had a fiery, passionate relationship. The sex was always perfect, but what else was there? With Jared’s careful steps forward, they add depth to their relationship, revisiting the friendship that was born before the passion.

1a

This story ties up all of the three couples story lines. I pretty much had a permanent smile for the last 20% of the book. The author promised a HEA, and she delivered, so calm your beating heart and prepare to dig in. If you are a fan of this series, this book is absolutely a MUST READ!

Last reviewer note: This author has the best playlists for her books.  I suggest you make an Aflame playlist on Spotify or whatever music site you use, and enjoy!  Can never go wrong adding the Beastie Boys into a book, imo.

Grace Review

Reviewer’s Note: Before starting this book, I glanced at some of the posts on Goodreads. What I saw, surprised me. Several posts mentioned that they didn’t really know who Jax was and why he was getting a story. It took awhile for me to understand why people might think this. And then it occurred to me that those reviewers likely never read Until You, Jared’s POV. It’s true that Jax has a very small part in Bully and Rival, although his role in how Madoc’s book turns out, was pretty huge! But without reading Until You, you may not understand why his story is so important. Do you have to read Until You to read Falling Away? No. Would I recommend you read it first? Yes!

This is Jax and KC’s story. They have always had an interesting dynamic that I couldn’t quite figure out. Especially with this quote from Until You:

“How old are you, anyway?” – KC
“Old enough to unravel you.” – Jax

Color me intrigued.

Like the characters or not, the hate/love relationships the author has created in this series, always feel real. Do they say or do the right things? Usually not. Do they learn from their mistakes? Eventually. These series features books of young adults (but don’t you dare call this YA, per the author), who are still figuring things out. Where mistakes are made and lessons are learned.

In Bully and Until You, the author perfectly captures the hell that some face in high school at the hands of a bully. Personally, I think Tate got it easy compared to some, and she handled it all like a champ. In this series, the author captures the uncertainty many face as they head off to college. This is when you’re supposed to figure everything out. But what happens when you have no sense of direction? No support. And feel like your life is going in reverse, rather than forward. This was KC’s dilemma. Oddly enough, her fucktard of a boyfriend and some hacking skills by Jax, may end up being the best thing to ever happen to her.

Like most people, I wasn’t a fan of KC’s going into this book. What she did to Tate in Bully was completely wrong and selfish. For those reasons, I’m actually really happy that the author gave us her story, because there is so much more to her than those moments of stupidity with Jared.

I was surprised by the sympathy I felt for KC in this book. She has hidden away so much, only sharing her true name, Juliet, and past with Tate. As the story progresses, you can feel the pain she felt growing up. I won’t go into details here, but it seems that she perpetually felt like she didn’t matter to anyone – forced to be someone else. With her douche of an ex, cheating on her multiple times, that feeling of solitude/rejection was only amplified. The moment she sits in a car and quietly whispers to herself what she likes about Jax, was one of the most sweet, unexpected and touching scenes. I felt myself slowly becoming her sideline cheerleader. Hoping she would find someone who would put her first and not repeat the mistakes of others. Sometimes Jax was that guy, other times he was a much of a bad idea as you could get.

For those reasons, my feelings for Jax were all over the board. On the surface, he is EXACTLY the type of guy I would have crushed on in high school/college. The ultimate bad boy. I already have a weakness for lacrosse players, something about the way they handle that stick. *ahem*

For those not familiar with lacrosse, let’s take a review timeout and watch this guy who has eyes on the back of his fucking head!

And I’m pregnant!

Ok, back to Jax. Aside from his lacrosse skills, he has long hair, which I love! And then there’s the car racing and hacking skills.

Athletic + sexy + smart = Ginger down

However, Jax is not perfect. He does a good job at pissing me the fuck off at times in this book. But his own past seems to be the reasons for his outbursts.

“You’re gutless and helpless and I’ve never met anyone so desperate to get out of her own skin.”

For Jax, raised in a household where he was abused, there was a feeling of helplessness. No one cared for or about him. Until Jared. Escaping the chains of his abusive father and the horrors he faced in the basement, Jax has become focused on one thing, being in control. While not everything he does is on the up and up, I was surprised at his drive and ambition. Within his new home, he has carefully build himself a better life. However, one person tilts that world on its axis and he begins feeling a loss of control. For those reasons, Jax isn’t always nice to KC/Juliet. In fact, sometimes he is downright cruel. But as I mentioned previously, no one does the hate to love relationship better than this author. Her characters build walls with cruel words and actions, but those walls, when broken down, show a longing, a powerful connection the characters within these stories can’t hide from. And just like the previous books, I loved to see those walls crumble.

Wanting her was an addiction, and that was why I’d never made my move. I wanted her in my head more than I wanted her in my bed. I never wanted the chase to end.
Until I’d had a taste of her in the weight room. Then everything left my control.

When those walls come down in this book, the passion is intense! Jax had me panting with just his words – his explanation on how to drive manual transmission is dripping with innuendos.

1c

But he’s a bit of a tease with Juliet (I’m just going with that name since its the right one) – heating her up and then throwing an insult like a bucket of ice water. Just cruel! But there were moments, such as the funhouse . . . holy hotness!!! *fans self*

Tate and Jared are still my favorite couple in this series, but Jax and Juliet’s are not far behind. Their story was a huge surprise, in a good way. The author has a way of carrying me off into their world filled with pain and sadness, but also with an intense drive to consume one another. I loved reading the dance between Jax and Juliet, their push and pull between anger and lust, between sadness and love. And I cheered for them to make it work, every step of the way.

Parting thoughts: Since this book released back on 1/6, I think it’s ok to discuss the Aflame sneak peak at this point. If you don’t want any spoilers, or don’t want the cliffy like feeling, then skip reading the sneak peak. Personally, I skimmed over it because I was given a heads up about it and wasn’t ready to take it on. But to those attacking the author, I just don’t understand. If you’ve read anything by this author, and love her work like I do, you know that the heart of her books is the character conflict. Did you really think she’d write a book that would be rainbows and unicorns? If so, you might be confusing her with another author. Do I think that my heart will hurt reading Aflame? Probably. But I trust this author to leave me smiling at the end, and you should too!

Q & A with Jaxon Trent
I was lucky enough to get some time with Jax due to his busy schedule.  I could have spend hours talking with him, but only got 10 minutes . .
The easy questions
What is your pump up song before you race?
I don’t stick to one song. I get bored easily, but I like Rob Zombie and Disturbed.

All-time favorite book?
What’s a book? Just kidding. Treasure Island. My middle name is Hawkins and I like to think it’s after Jim Hawkins, the main character. Some day if I ever decide to meet my mother, I’ll ask why she gave me that name.

Who is your celebrity crush?
Megan Fox. The hair and eyes remind me of Juliet.

The not-so-easy questions
Craziest place you ever had sex?

The funhouse. I’ve done it in public but never in the middle of the day in such easy view of others. That was definitely a risk and a rush.

A lot has been said about how different you are from Jared. How do you think you two are alike?
We have many of the same interests and same disinterests. Music, clothes, hobbies…and we both are violently protective of those we love.

What are you most afraid of?
Being out of control, I think. When others cage you in–back you into a corner–it feels too real. Like there’s no way out and things are happening TO you that you can’t stop. I don’t like that feeling. I always want to know who everyone is, what to expect on any given day, and what I can and can’t count on. I don’t like surprises.
I also really don’t like clowns.

I know your childhood was far from ideal, but was there anyone you idolized? If so, who and why?
Jared. Plain and simple, I wanted to be my brother. Seeing him fight my father—stand up to him—is what made me finally fight back. Jared acted from the gut, and I envied that. Don’t get me wrong. Sometimes that’s gotten him into a lot of trouble, but I also realize that I consider decisions too much when sometimes I should just be like him.

Did you ever think your story would make a good book? Who would you want to write your story?
Everyone’s story is worth telling, because everyone has one. And I’d love for Juliet to write it someday. She’s a great writer.

If you had 1 do-over moment with Juliet, what would it be?
The party where I pushed her away after the camping trip. I’ve always considered it an asset to be able to shut down and go cold. To do what I believe it necessary at the time. That the ends justify the means. I was wrong. I hurt her as much as if I’d hit her, and there are always better ways to handle yourself.

In the romance world, women always look forward to a HEA – Happily Ever After. What would be your HEA?
Marrying Juliet and hopefully having a kid someday. I don’t really care where we end up as long as she’s at my side every single morning when I wake up.

Thanks Jax! XOXO

Synopsis

Jaxon is the guy she’s supposed to avoid. K.C. is the girl he won’t let get away….

K. C. Carter has always followed the rules—until this year, when a mistake leaves her the talk of her college campus and her carefully arranged life comes crashing to a halt. Now she’s stuck in her small hometown for the summer to complete her court-ordered community service, and to make matters worse, trouble is living right next door.

Jaxon Trent is the worst kind of temptation and exactly what K.C. was supposed to stay away from in high school. But he never forgot her. She was the one girl who wouldn’t give him the time of day and the only one to ever say no. Fate has brought K.C. back into his life—except what he thought was a great twist of luck turns out to be too close for comfort. As they grow closer, he discovers that convincing K.C. to get out from her mother’s shadow is hard, but revealing the darkest parts of his soul is nearly impossible.

Chapter 9

“Jax, I can’t,” she breathed, placing her hands on my chest. “I . . . ,” she stammered, “I don’t exactly dislike you anymore, but this isn’t a good idea. As much as I’d like to give in, I can’t be that girl.”

“What girl?”

She stared at me. “A one-night stand.”

My fists tightened around her shirt. So that was what she thought I wanted?

My voice hardened. “What makes you think you’d be a one-night stand?”

“Because you’re Jared Trent’s brother. Because you’re young. Why would you want more?” she asked, her tone light. “I’m not trying to be prissy, okay? You get to me. I like the way you feel. I’m just not ready for this.” Her lips pursed, and she started to rise, but I pulled her back down.

“Ready for what?” I bit out, getting seriously fucking annoyed at her assumptions and the fact that she compared me to Jared. Two minutes ago she’d had her arms and legs wrapped around me.

Her eyebrows shot up, challenging me. “This,” she spat out, and dug into my pocket, pulling out my knife. “It’s been digging into the back of my thigh since I sat down. Why do you have so many computers? Why do the cops let you get away with anything? What do you do to make a living? And why do you carry a knife, Jax?”

My chest filled with delight at her anger. She was getting ballsier by the minute.

I shot her a smirk. “Because it’s quiet.”

And I almost laughed at her arched eyebrow. She was asking why I carried a knife, and I just answered why I carried a knife instead of a gun.

She averted her eyes, but I caught the annoyed expression as she raised the knife up to her face, studying it. She hit the button, and the blade shot out right between us.

I had only a moment to wonder what the hell she was doing before I reared back, seeing her jab the knife into my space.

“You think you scare me, don’t you?” she taunted, holding the blade to my neck, playing with me.

I sucked in a few quick breaths and let out a startled laugh as my heart slammed against my ribs. Well, this was new.

I swallowed, meeting her triumphant little smile and leaning into the blade, feeling the sharp, cool steel bite into my neck. “You want to play? You don’t know how to play my games, Juliet.”

And I snatched the knife out of her scarred hand and brought it down to the hem of her shirt, slicing it up the middle.

“Jax!” she screamed, fumbling with her now useless T-shirt as I threw the blade onto the floor. “What are you doing?”

Grabbing her around the waist, I stood up, whipped her around, and planted her in front

of the window looking down onto the backyard full of partiers.

I wrapped my arms around her shaking body and growled into her ear from behind her, “God, Juliet. You think I just wanna fuck? You think I wanna keep myself hidden and mysterious, because it’s my play to get women into bed? Huh?” I pressed. “No, baby. I could fuck ten different girls tonight if I wanted to. I don’t want to do that.”

Her chest shook, and she squirmed against me, probably scared that we could be seen out the window.

“So, what do you want?” she cried. “If not a one-night stand?”

I closed my burning eyes, and buried my lips in her hair. “I want to terrorize you,” I confessed. “I want to cut you without drawing blood. I want to break you.” I pulled her into me. “And then I want to fuck you.”

From the moment I laid eyes on her I had wanted to break her out of her shell. I wanted to see her undone, and I wanted to take her over. For how long, I didn’t know, but I knew it would be for more than one night.

I also knew it wouldn’t be forever.

Her breathing slowed, and she stilled, staring out the window. I straightened behind her and peeled off the T-shirt she was holding closed.

“Jax,” she whimpered, turning her face to me. “They can see us.”

Reaching around, I turned her chin back toward the window. “They can’t see you. The window’s tinted.” The shirt, sliced up the front, fell down her arms and spilled to the floor. “But you can see them, Juliet,” I pointed out, gently running my hands up her bare arms. “They drink, they laugh, they have meaningless conversations about what’s trending on Twitter.” I paused and dug my fingers into her hips, pulling her ass into me and breathing into her ear, “And I’m so jacked up I want you so bad.”

Synopsis
Madoc and Fallon. Two estranged teenagers playing games that push the boundaries between love and war…

She’s back.

For the two years she’s been away at boarding school, there was no word from her. Back when we lived in the same house, she used to cut me down during the day and then leave her door open for me at night.

I was stupid then, but now I’m ready to beat her at her own game…

I’m back.

Two years and I can tell he still wants me, even if he acts like he’s better than me.

But I won’t be scared away. Or pushed down. I’ll call his bluff and fight back. That’s what he wants, right? As long as I keep my guard up, he’ll never know how much he affects me…

Grace Review
This book is a companion novel to Bully, and can be read as a stand-alone if you didn’t read Bully.  BUT, you really should read Bully!  It was in my top 5 list of favorite books of 2013.  I literally read that book in one day, once again ignoring my whole family.  It’s a miracle I’m not single again.  Anywho, when I finished Bully, like a lot of other people, I was dying to get in Jared’s head.  I knew there was more to his story, and I’m so happy the author shared it with us.  Two other people I was dying to know more about were Jax, Jared’s step-brother (we have to wait for his story), and Madoc, Jared’s BFF. If you read Bully, you know that while he joined Jared in the Tate tormenting ritual, he also challenged his friend’s intentions and said things were going too far.  That earned him a couple points away from the douche vote.  But he is not exactly in the good guy category, yet. In this book, he has a new target, his stepsister, Fallon.

Side note: Before I go further, it is important to know that Madoc and Fallon have completely different sets of parents.

Similar to Bully, these two pretend to hate each other, when it is clear to the reader, that there are so many other emotions between them (this story isn’t a repeat of Bully, have no fear).  Lust being one of their emotions.  Don’t use your judgie eyes, now you understand my side note.  Despite the anger flowing between them, they can’t seem to keep their hands off each other.

It all seemed to start as a bit of exploration and fun, two teens learning about their bodies and how to please one another.

I’d wait for him at night, my heart pumping a mile a minute, knowing he was coming. Knowing that he was going to touch me. I loved all of it. I never wanted the sun to come up.

And while neither would admit it, feelings developed.  When they are separated, and lies are told to each of them, the hatred develops.  I’ll admit, it took me some time to connect with these two characters.  I didn’t understand the anger and how they just wouldn’t talk it out.  A lot of pain could have been avoided that way.  But hey, they’re teenagers so stupid mistakes are pretty much the norm.  As much of a dick Madoc is to Fallon in the beginning of this book, Fallon’s mind games were a bit frustrating.  She put Madoc thru the ringer on more than one occasion, to the point that I actually felt bad for him.

“This house, the cars, the money. It’s all an illusion. It’s like parading a victory when you missed the war.” She took a breath and whispered slowly. “Madoc has no idea who he is.”

Rival 3

While the relationship between Madoc and Fallon seems toxic, you can’t ignore the sexual tension between them.  And they can’t seem to fight it.

“Fuck the past,” he breathed. “I want to hear that you missed it.”

Rival teaser 3

When these two finally decide to talk, a lot of misunderstandings are explained.  I liked how they partnered to get back at Fallon’s Mom, who by the way, is a complete thundercunt!  But Jax takes care of her in shocking fashion.  That boy is T-R-O-U-B-L-E.  Did I mention that I’m dying for his book?

Rival Teaser 2

Parting thoughts: Since it was discussed publicly on twitter, I did want to address an issue some people had problems with in this book.  There is slut slamming in this book.  I know this trend in books bothers some people.  While I think the concept of slut slamming is awful, obviously, since I’m a woman, it didn’t feel out of place with this book.  Why?   This isn’t a story of some goodie-two-shoes young man.  He is your typical obnoxious young man who says some really rude things.  If you went to high school, any high school, you know this guy.  Madoc (and Jared) represent that guy.  You may not like them at first.  You may not like them at the end.  It is the author’s job to tell a good story.  Maybe she convinces you along the way that this guy is better than how he initially was portrayed, maybe she doesn’t.  I actually don’t care either way, although the latter is always better.  What I care about is a well written and interesting story that does sound like every other story out there.  And this author does that with each book I read from her, which is why I continue to be a fan.
