Happy Endings Resort Series

Our resort is full of characters—residents, staff, locals from town, and our visitors and guests—all with a story to be told. Come join us for this unique series. Each month will be a new book by a different author, with a new cast of characters, as well as characters from other books in the series stopping by.

~Book Nine~

October, when the veil between the living and the dead thins until it becomes transparent on the 31st and the living and dead once again walk together.

Happy Endings Resort, where everyone gets their happy ending. Right?

Esmeralda “Es” Boswell lives at Happy Endings Resort, but she is still waiting for her happy ending. She spends her days working as a receptionist for a local construction company, watching couples come in, designing and building their dream homes. Her nights and weekends are spent traveling around the countryside giving happy-ever-after psychic readings at fairs and carnivals. Even her dreams are filled with happy endings, of what could be. But in reality, she is alone, trying to earn enough money to take care of her father’s mounting medical bills and so far away from her happily-ever-after she thinks she is destined to walk her life alone.

Hardened newspaper owner and reporter, Dominic McKay, knows there is no such thing as happily-ever-after. As a boy, his parents died and he was left with his only living relative, a spunky grandmother who raised him. She taught him to stand up for what is right and to fight what is wrong, a trait he takes very seriously as an adult. When she dies suddenly, he knows there is more than meets the eye, there had to be something sinister behind her death. Someone had to benefit from killing her, and he was going to figure out who it was. He looks no further than the local psychic who had been giving her readings on an almost daily basis, and looks to prove she’s behind the murder of the one person he could always depend on.

But when there is one death, there is always another. And death follows Es wherever she goes. Can they both survive what is heading in their direction? Will they have their happily-ever- after? Or will they let this once in a lifetime chance slip through their fingers.

Chapter One

Es

I cry out in pain as the knife slices through my stomach, looking down I watch as blood pours out of me and splashes to the dry dusty ground.

Sitting straight up in bed my fingers dig into my stomach hoping to stop the pain as the remains of the dream still lingered fresh behind my eyes. Another nightmare. Looking over at the clock on my bedside table I see it is 3:13 AM. Great, I thought to myself. Not only did I have a nightmare during the darkest hour of the night I also had it in October, when the vail between the living and the dead is at its thinnest.

My name is Esmeralda Boswell, or Es for short and I’m a psychic living a double life in a small trailer at Happy Endings Resort in Endings, South Carolina.

By day I am a conservative receptionist at a local construction company. I watch happy couple, after happy couple come in, design their dream home and live happily-ever-after in it.

But nights and weekends I travel the roads peddling my wears to the populace who are hoping for one future, but in reality are destined for something completely different. Since no one really wants to know how dull and boring their lives really are meant to be, I put a spin on it. They all want the same thing. Their happy-ever-after.

I try to keep both of my lives separate, but sometimes they overlap. Sometimes as hard as I try they rush headlong into each other and burn in a fiery crash.

If my dream was to be believed, I’m heading for a disaster of epic proportions.  At this point I could only hope death wouldn’t follow me, again.

I really liked these people at Happy Endings Resort, I don’t want any of them to die. I finally thought I had found a place where I was happy, where I fit in. Well, as much as I could anyway. There were people here who accepted me for who I was. I’d been searching for somewhere to live all of these years and it was here, at Happy Endings Resort. I’d seen my future, and it was here. So the real question was, am I going to survive what is coming, or is this my final stand against death?

Synopsis

This novella is a standalone that is part of The Club series. To learn more about The Club, visit www.theclub.website or www.facebook.com/theclubseries

The rules at The Club were simple:

Keep your mouth shut.

Keep your mouth shut.

Keep your mouth shut.

This was a rule Starr Fields could follow. After searching for years, she finally found what she thought was home. A place where she could go in, keep a bar between her and the customers, pour drinks, make good money, and go home. A place where she didn’t have to worry about her mama’s boyfriends thinking she was fair game. A place where she could simply be.

Bryant Harrison was new to Karim, Texas. After years of moving around and buying one company after another, he threw a dart on a map and decided to move his home base from New York City to where it landed. Now he had every failing business man in town trying to get him to take their problems away.

One glance was all it took for these two to know this was going to be more than a casual meeting. Their feelings were growing quickly as the air became crisp and the leaves changed color. As Halloween approaches, it would seem the unknown monster that hunted Starr wasn’t going to just watch from the shadows for much longer.

Can Bryant be her Knight in Shining Armor and save her in time, or will she slip away as quickly as they fell in love?

Excerpt

I leaned on the table, getting closer to her and lowered my voice. “We’re both adults, we know exactly where this is heading. Why don’t we say no more games and get down to business?”

She mimicked me and also leaned in. “Tell me, Bryant, is that all this is to you? Business?”

“Do you believe in fairytales?”

She raised an eyebrow at me. “Well, there’s a change of subject.”

“Not really, bear with me and answer the question.”

“No, no I don’t.”

“Hmmm… now that is strange.” I picked up one of her hands and started playing with her fingers. “I’m going to stereotype genders now, but typically the female is the one who believes in them, even to adulthood, and it’s the male who doesn’t. It would seem in our case, it’s reversed.”

Starr shrugged. “I wasn’t raised with them. Since I didn’t have the typical childhood, I never had friends growing up to even know what I was missing.”

“I’m sure it’s different for girls, but for boys, the fairytales were all about the adventure. Slaying the dragon, saving the princess. Even as adults, even though we would never admit it, we still want the adventure, we still want to find our princess and slay her dragons, keep her safe. So what I mean by getting down to business is the fact that I’ve found you, and now I’m looking around for your dragon that I need to slay.”

“I don’t have any dragons.” She shook her head.

“Are you sure? It doesn’t have to be your typical evil queen or wizard, maybe it is as simple as getting past the castle walls you’ve built around yourself and showing you it’s okay to let someone in. I’ve been listening to you talk all evening, and you’ve lived alone more than with someone, even when you were with your mother, she was never really there. I can be there for you, but you have to give us a chance.”

“Do you understand how strange this all sounds? We just met for Christ’s sake. Things like this don’t happen unless…”

“Unless you’re in a fairytale, or a movie. But really, go on any social media site and ask the question, ‘Does love at first sight happen in real life?’ and I’ll bet good money you will get dozens of stories within the first hour of people who met their spouses and fell in love at first sight, or at least within the first few dates. It does happen, Starr, and it’s happening to us.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“How can you not be sure? Tell me, has anything like this ever happened to you before? I’ll answer for you, no it hasn’t. Close your eyes.” I waited for her to do it and I laced my fingers through hers. “How does it make you feel when I hold your hand like this?”

She took a shaky breath. “I feel your strength, your conviction, your honesty. My stomach is full of butterflies as I see a future like none I’ve ever dreamed of.”

“Do you want that dream?” My voice was hushed, her answer meant so much to me.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“Then just let it happen.”

Michelle's Review

5 Butterfly Stars

As I am typing this review tears are still rolling down my face. I was introduced to M. Stratton (or Michele with one L, as I like to call her) by my fellow blogger, Yaya, last year. If you have read any of
Michele’s other books, well you are in for a surprise with a 120 Days. She can write a romantic suspense which will have you on the edge, or she can write a sweet contemporary series like The Star Series, For 120 Days she will not only make you grab a box of tissues, but will make you see life in a whole new perspective.

If you have read the synopsis, you already know this is a book about cancer, yet there is also a love story, but I am jumping ahead. Ethan McGregor is a real estate developer and his purpose in life is to make the next investment, well that is until his younger brother drops by and turns Ethan’s world upside down. Evan shows up to tell Ethan that he is dying and only has a few weeks to live. Basically, he was saying goodbye to Ethan. Evan’s last wish is for Ethan not to find him, to let him die with dignity. Ethan raised Evan after losing their
parents, he basically put his life on hold to make sure Evan would grow up in a home.
After Ethan’s brother passes away, he leaves him with his journal

about his time at Last Resort. Ethan wants to see the place where his brother spent his dying days. He also wanted to see first-hand if Last Resort was a good place or a place where the owner may be scamming the dying. Yup, Ethan was an asshole, at first.

Little did Ethan know that Samantha Truman not only ran a beautiful facility where those who came to live out they dying days, but would make sure they did it with lots of activities and most of all love.  Sam, as everyone called her, lost both of her parents to cancer. She wanted her guests to live out their dying days with fun and laughter.

Ethan shows up at Last Resort to work with ulterior motives, but once he sees for himself how truly happy the guest are and most of all, how truly devoted Sam is to Last Resort, his tune changes very quickly. Throughout his time there, he reads his brother’s journal which also helps him more motivated in trying to help Sam with Last Resort. Never would Ethan would have expected to fall in love either. I could go on describing this beautifully written story Michele wrote, but I want you to experience it for yourself. I would suggest you read in the privacy of your home because the tears will come and it will come in abundance. Towards the end, I had to message the author crying my eyes out.

This book made me think of my other whom I lost three years ago to pancreatic cancer. They did not give her much time, but her determination and perseverance had her living two more years from when she was diagnosed. My mother died a week after my daughter’s first communion. The day after my daughter’s communion, she asked me to put her in hospice. The last two days on this earth, my mother was surrounded by many family and friends. I saw my mother take her last breath while I held her hand.

Michele, thank you for this beautiful tribute to your parents. I pray that they are with you for many more years to come. It truly was an honor to read this book.

Rating: 4 stars

Synopsis

Royce wanted nothing more than to slay the demons which kept her away from him so they could have their happily ever after.

When two people battling demons meet and can no longer deny their feelings, there is nothing they can do but see if their wish comes true.

Michelle's Review

This is book 2 in the series and it’s Hannah Miller’s story. If you read book 1, you already know she is the assistant to writer Melissa Loring. You can read this book as a standalone, but I would suggest you read When Dreams Come True (Star Series #1) that you way you get to know Hannah and Royce before reading Wishing.

Hannah and Royce hooked up in book 1. You already know that Royce Rivers is an actor and his best friend is also fellow actor Will Martinnson and who is engaged to Melissa Loring. Hannah’s and Royce affair was brief since Hannah does not believe in Happily Ever Afters. She has had an awful experience with an ex and she does not want to go down that road again.

Royce is having none of it. He wants his redheaded woman back. Royce had some issues regarding his past, but he has put those in the back burner. He does not want to destroy his career with the previous mistakes he has made in the past. He wants Hannah and will do anything in his power to get her back into his life.

Their chemistry for each other was always there even from book 1, it didn’t take long for Hannah to let Royce into her heart and back into her bed, but she finds out her ex will be getting out of prison soon, can only test their relationship. I thought this book would have a little more angst given that Hannah’s ex-boyfriend was coming out of prison, but overall, the story did not disappoint. Although, I thought Hannah was going to give Royce a harder time to win her over, but the story did not fail. This book was a quick read. Some really nice sexy times. Way to go Michele, I really enjoyed this book. Looking forward to reading Hope’s story next in the series.

Book Review: When Dreams Come True by M. Stratton

1a

Title: When Dreams Come True (The Star Series #1)
Author: M. Stratton
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Length: 243 pages
Rating: 4 stars

Synopsis

What would you do if the man of your dreams walked through the door on the most important day of your career?

Melissa ‘Lissa’ Loring was a successful author. She was happy living in her home at the base of the mountains in Tucson with her assistant, Hannah Mills. First the phone call came; they wanted to make one of her books into a movie. Within six months, she was flying out to Los Angeles and talking with the studio about the final script and a list of actors to play the roles. Excited about her lunch meeting, she was shocked when her muse for one of the characters walked in and sat down at the table with her.

Will Martinsson was riding high on his fame and loving every minute of it. He traveled the world meeting his legions of fans and could pick which roles he wanted. When the script was presented to him, he read it and was intrigued. Then he found out that the author had modeled the character after him, so he searched out information on her and his interest was piqued. He told the studio he wanted in, but he also wanted to meet her before he would sign on the dotted line.

When two independent, successful people meet and have a strong connection, there is nothing they can do but see where the dream takes them.

Michelle's Review

When I heard that Michele was writing a Contemporary Romance novel, I knew I had to get it. Michele usually writes romance/suspense/mystery type of novels, so it was a great pleasure to see her write a Contemporary Romance novel. This book showed a different side to her writing, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Don’t get me wrong, I also enjoy her suspenseful ones as well, but having this little gem to read shows me that Michele can write just about any genre. There is some wonderful sexy times, but not to the extreme, lots of it will leave it to your imagination which is wonderful. This book was focused on the main characters and their instant attraction and focuses on the romance and love story unfolding.

Melissa (or Lissa to her friends) Loring is a well renowned suspenseful author (sound familiar lol) and one of her books is being make into a movie. While writing this book, her muse was Will Martinsson, who happens to be an actor who is always casted as the villain that people hate to love. Little did she know that she would be having lunch with her muse. Will is a big fan of her writing and he wants to be casted for the role of the main character from her book.

Let’s just say we needed a hose with these two. The chemistry was so hot between these two. Will is the true BBF you would want. Not only is he good looking, he is also extremely charming and totally swoon worthy. Lissa has lots of quirks which are funny and quite endearing, yet when some of her insecurities come up, Will assures her, he only has eyes for her.

There is a little bit of drama having to deal with the public eye. As much as they are trying to maintain their relationship quiet, it just doesn’t happen with the leeches that is the paparazzi. There is an HEA in the book, but a little of a cliffhanger which really relates to Lissa’s BFF/Assistant Hannah.

You will adore the rest of the secondary character, like Hannah, Beau (Will’s assistant) and Royce a fellow actor and friend of Will’s. That cliffy was a bit of a dozy and I cannot wait to hear what is Hannah and Royce’s back story. These two sound like two tortured souls. This book, although a novel, it is still a quick read and for me anyway, did not lag. Michele, you knocked it out of the ballpark with this novel.
