Synopsis
Can your favorite hockey players finish their first season together undefeated?

Five months in, NHL forward Ryan Wesley is having a record-breaking rookie season. He’s living his dream of playing pro hockey and coming home every night to the man he loves–Jamie Canning, his longtime best friend turned boyfriend. There’s just one problem: the most important relationship of his life is one he needs to keep hidden, or else face a media storm that will eclipse his success on the ice.

Jamie loves Wes. He really, truly does. But hiding sucks. It’s not the life Jamie envisioned for himself, and the strain of keeping their secret is taking its toll. It doesn’t help that his new job isn’t going as smoothly as he’d hoped, but he knows he can power through it as long as he has Wes. At least apartment 10B is their retreat, where they can always be themselves.

Author Spotlight (Interview): Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

☆ ☆ ☆ Author Spotlight: @SarinaBowen and @ElleKennedy ☆ ☆ ☆

The Shorties (and the NOT so short one Rachel, lol) are extremely excited to have Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy here with us today. If you are on Facebook, you may know they are two of the many coaches of The Locker Room. Grace, Ivy and myself have read most of their sports romance books, especially their collaborative book “Him” which came out on July 28, 2015. “Shorties Approved”. If you haven’t one-clicked “Him” yet, we all suggest you do so, HOT!

Interview

What inspired your collaboration?

Sarina: I’m going to let Elle answer this one. It was really her idea!

Elle: I’ve wanted to write a m/m for a while, but it never seemed to be a good fit for any of my current series. So one day Sarina and I were joking around and somehow the idea of writing a m/m together came up. I didn’t think we were being serious, but the next thing I know, she’s emailing me with ideas. I took about two seconds to think about it, and then was like, “I’m in!”

How did your love of hockey begin?

Sarina: I grew up in Michigan, where hockey was everywhere. In fact, all the high schools had teams, yet I’d never seen a soccer game or a lacrosse stick. Loving hockey was just inevitable

Elle: I’m Canadian.

LOL, Elle.

Besides hockey, what other sports do you enjoy watching?

Sarina: Snow sports are really big in Vermont, and watching ski races and snowboard events is really fun. In fact, my son gave me the first line of one of my Gravity books when he was eight years old. He told me that the scariest moment in ski racing isn’t while you’re skiing–it’s when the person in line just before you is racing. Because all that adrenaline has nowhere to go.

Elle: NFL football! I’m a football nut (confession: I love it more than hockey…)

We all loved how you both managed to give Jamie such a cool family and showing some of the difficulties when coming out in professional sports. Any personal inspiration from your family?

Sarina: I come from a tiny family, but I always wanted one like Jamie’s.

Elle: I don’t have a big family, and I’ve always been jealous of those who do. I can’t remember who came up with the idea of Jamie having a million brothers and sisters (I think it might have been Sarina), but I loved the idea from the start, and developing the Canning clan was one of my favorite things about writing this book.

What’s their favorite hockey teams?

Sarina: I follow college hockey, and Yale is my team. One of the fun things about hockey is that small schools can compete at a high level. It’s not a money sport like football.

Elle: Boston Bruins.

What has been most challenging about writing?

Sarina: Finishing things. Just like anything in life.

Elle: Deadlines. Having to force myself to write when I don’t feel inspired is really difficult sometimes, especially when a deadline is looming over my head.

Do you listen to music while writing and if so, what type of music do you listen to?

Sarina: I need silence. Even instrumental music distracts me.

Elle: I write in silence!

Would you consider writing another book together?

Sarina: Heck yeah!

Elle: Abso-frickin-lutely.

I (Michelle) know the answer to this question, but for your readers, when writing “Him” did either of you write Jaime and Ryan’s POV or did you both pick off where the other left off?

Sarina: We both wrote both perspectives, trading after approximately 2000 words. Elle has co-written before, so she knew what to do.

Elle: We wrote both POVS. I think the first scene I wrote was the opening chapter in Wes’s POV, and Sarina did the next chapter with Jamie. Then we switched off so we’d both get a sense of the other character’s thoughts. After that, we would write whoever and stop whenever, and the other one would pick up the torch.

Rapid Fire Questions

Favorite author?

Sarina: I won’t pick. You can’t make me. 🙂

Elle: I can’t pick just one.

Favorite romance book?

Sarina: See above

Elle: Wanderlust by Danielle Steel.

Current read?

Sarina: Jen Frederick’s SACKED.

Elle: Captive by Brighton Walsh

Biggest vice?

Sarina: Caffeine

Elle: Smoking

Favorite musician?

Sarina: Eh, Hozier?

Elle: Too many to name!

Coke or Pepsi?

Sarina: tonic with gin in it.

Elle: Coke

Favorite Actor to play Batman?

Sarina: Um…?

Elle: Keaton, hands down.

Favorite Star Wars character?

Sarina: Chewbacca

Elle: I’m not a Star Wars fan! I guess I’d pick Han Solo because that’s one of the only character names I know.

Thanks ladies!

Genre: Sports Romance
Length: 268 pages

Synopsis

The sport she loves is out of reach. The boy she loves has someone else.

What now?

She expected to start Harkness College as a varsity ice hockey player. But a serious accident means that Corey Callahan will start school in a wheelchair instead.

Across the hall, in the other handicapped-accessible dorm room, lives the too-delicious-to-be real Adam Hartley, another would-be hockey star with his leg broken in two places. He’s way out of Corey’s league.

Also, he’s taken.

Nevertheless, an unlikely alliance blooms between Corey and Hartley in the “gimp ghetto” of McHerrin Hall. Over tequila, perilously balanced dining hall trays, and video games, the two cope with disappointments that nobody else understands.

They’re just friends, of course, until one night when things fall apart. Or fall together. All Corey knows is that she’s falling. Hard.

But will Hartley set aside his trophy girl to love someone as broken as Corey? If he won’t, she will need to find the courage to make a life for herself at Harkness — one which does not revolve around the sport she can no longer play, or the brown-eyed boy who’s afraid to love her back.

A blind date. A nervous sorority girl. A mean-spirited fraternity prank. What could possibly go wrong?

As a sorority pledge, there are commandments that Katie Vickery must live by. One: thou shalt not show up for the party without a date. Two: the guy shall be an athlete, preferably an upperclassman.

Unfortunately, Katie just broke up with her jerkface football player boyfriend. Even worse, her last encounter with him resulted in utter humiliation. She’d rather hide under the bed than attend a party where he’ll be.

Yet staying home would mean letting him win.

Enjoying herself tonight was out of the question. She could only hope to get through the evening without her blind date noticing that he was spending the evening with a crazy person.

Andrew Baschnagel is living proof that nice guys don’t finish first. He’s had his eye on Katie since the moment her long legs waltzed into his art history class. So when her roommate sets Andy up to be Katie’s date, he’d be crazy to say no. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a lot of practice with either girls or parties. Yet.

Book Title: The Understatement of the Year (The Ivy Years #3)
Genre: Sports Romance
Length: 300 pages

Synopsis

What happened in high school stayed in high school. Until now.

Five years ago, Michael Graham betrayed the only person who ever really knew him. Since then, he’s made an art of hiding his sexuality from everyone. Including himself.

So it’s a shock when his past strolls right into the Harkness College locker room, sporting a bag of hockey gear and the same slow smile that had always rendered Graham defenseless. For Graham, there is only one possible reaction: total, debilitating panic. With one loose word, the team’s new left wing could destroy Graham’s life as he knows it.

John Rikker is stuck being the new guy. Again. And it’s worse than usual, because the media has latched onto the story of the only “out” player in Division One hockey. As the satellite trucks line the sidewalk outside the rink, his new teammates are not amused.

And one player in particular looks sick every time he enters the room.

Rikker didn’t exactly expect a warm welcome from Graham. But the guy won’t even meet his eyes. From the looks of it, his former… best friend / boyfriend / whatever isn’t doing so well. He drinks too much and can’t focus during practice.

Either the two loneliest guys on the team will self destruct from all the new pressures in their lives, or they can navigate the pain to find a way back to one another. To say that it won’t be easy is the Understatement of the Year.

THIS BOOK IS A STANDALONE. NO CLIFFHANGERS. NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.

Warning: unlike the other books in this series, this heartbreaking love story is about two guys. Contains sexual situations, dance music, snarky t-shirts and a poker-playing grandmother.

Synopsis

The girl who’s had everyone meets the boy who has no one.

For Bella, the sweet-talking, free-loving, hip-checking student manager of the Harkness men’s hockey team, sex is a second language. She’s used to being fluent where others stutter, and the things people say behind her back don’t (often) bother her. So she can’t understand why her smoking hot downstairs neighbor has so much trouble staying friends after their spontaneous night together. She knows better than to worry about it, but there’s something in those espresso eyes that makes her second guess herself.

Rafe is appalled with himself for losing his virginity in a drunken hookup. His strict Catholic upbringing always emphasized loving thy neighbor—but not with a bottle of wine and a box of condoms. The result is an Ivy League bout of awkwardness. But when Bella is leveled by a little bad luck and a downright sinister fraternity stunt, it’s Rafe who is there to pick up the pieces.

Bella doesn’t want Rafe’s help, and she’s through with men. Too bad the undeniable spark that crackles between the two of them just can’t be extinguished.

Michelle: To say that I was a wee bit excited I saw that two coaches from The Locker Room were collaborating on an m/m book, I may have done a little dance.  What made it even better is that I got to read it with my co-blogger Ivy.

Ivy: Me too! Getting a chance to buddy read was great, and I was super excited to see more hockey romance. I’m a huge fan of Ms. Kennedy’s jocks…which sounds weird but I swear it isn’t. Seriously, jocks and their stick handling make me smile.

Michelle: I agree Ivy, jocks and their stick handling makes me smile too.  Oh boy do they ever handle their sticks on and off the rink (yup, pun intended).

Ivy: Add to all that, “best friends to lovers” is a trope I adore. I think alot of time and care was given to developing that childhood friendship between Wes and really showing the reader that these two guys had always had a connection from very early on. The way their friendship was derailed made sense and the way their first “bet” was unveiled to the audience was touching and super hot.

Michelle: Oh yeah, kudos again Ivy.  Although the “misunderstanding” at the beginning of the book was a little heartbreaking.

1d

Ivy: The chemistry is strong with these two, right?

Michelle: Holy shitzballs was the chemistry off the charts.  That first kiss, scorching hot.  The first sexy times, I thought I had to call the fire department.

Ivy: Friendship stories can be tricky because sometimes the friendship overshadows any sexual heat, but that is SO not the case here. Their sexual encounters are stellar (including the little jealousies of other people).  From their first real kiss to the end, it’s just crazy hot. But, it’s a very well rounded emotional story, not just (amazingly) hot sex.

1e

Michelle: The story flowed and the plot so well written and I agree, the sexy times well, see what I wrote above.  I’m still fanning myself.

Ivy: But that sex is nothing to sneeze at.

Michelle: Hello, I won’t be calling an allergist anytime soon for the sex scenes.

Ivy: Their challenges are realistic, if slightly idealized and honestly idealized works just fine for my romances.  Lest anyone think it’s all unicorns and puppies, not everyone accepts their relationship and there are scenes where they’re judged and some nastiness that brings home the fact that it’s not all hearts and roses. I did think it was surprising how their professional careers were affected by their relationship, but I liked that surprise.

Michelle: 100% on point, Ivy.  The challenges these two men were facing very realistic.  To see how accepting most others were of their relationship made me smile.  I adored Jamie’s family!  I can’t say I was a fan of Ryan’s idiotic parents.  The story ebbed and flowed just to my liking and if you’ve read any of Ms. Bowen’s or Ms. Kennedy’s books, you get a sense of their unique writing style, but it all blends together seamlessly.

Ivy: Ryan’s parents were asshats, no doubt. And my heart broke for them when confronted with that bigotry head on. Bastard. Anyway, I’ve never read Ms. Bowen’s books, but this definitely makes me want to rectify that travesty ASAP. There was so much that I enjoyed that it’s hard to find things to disagree about lol. This is jumping onto my Do You list, as recommendation for anyone who needs a m/m sports romance, as well as my Top 10 for the year.

Michelle: I love me some of m/m romance, couple that with some sports and I’m the biggest fan.

So, there you have it – we LOVED it and we think you will too – this is Shorties Approved all the way!

– Michelle and Ivy

Book Review: The Mistake by Elle Kennedy

1a
Title: The Mistake (Off-Campus #2)
Author: Elle Kennedy
Genre: Sports Romance
Length: 358 pages
Rating: 5 stars

Synopsis
He’s a player in more ways than one…

College junior John Logan can get any girl he wants. For this hockey star, life is a parade of parties and hook-ups, but behind his killer grins and easygoing charm, he hides growing despair about the dead-end road he’ll be forced to walk after graduation. A sexy encounter with freshman Grace Ivers is just the distraction he needs, but when a thoughtless mistake pushes her away, Logan plans to spend his final year proving to her that he’s worth a second chance.

Now he’s going to need to up his game…

After a less than stellar freshman year, Grace is back at Briar University, older, wiser, and so over the arrogant hockey player she nearly handed her V-card to. She’s not a charity case, and she’s not the quiet butterfly she was when they first hooked up. If Logan expects her to roll over and beg like all his other puck bunnies, he can think again. He wants her back? He’ll have to work for it. This time around, she’ll be the one in the driver’s seat…and she plans on driving him wild.

Michelle's Review

Elle Kennedy has done it again with The Mistake. If you have read The Deal, you already know about John Logan. What, you haven’t read The Deal? You can read The Mistake as a standalone, but seriously, get The Deal. Well just in case you haven’t read The Deal, let me try to summarize John Logan. He’s a Junior at Briar University, hot hockey player and all around man whore around campus. Side note, I loved how my dirty red (Grace, that is our nickname for her) has already staked a claim on Logan. It must be because a) Logan is hot; b) he’s a hockey player and c) the girl he falls in love with, her name also happens to be Grace! But I digress. Moving on.

Grace Ivers, freshman at Briar University, shy and quiet and with her V card still intact (pun intended). Grace and her roommate/BFF Ramona are hanging out at a frat party. Grace is so not having fun until she bumps into Logan coming out of the bathroom looking all smug after hooking up with a girl in said bathroom! I adored Grace from the very beginning. I loved how smart she was and although a bit shy, she still could hold her own. I especially loved her blabbering and her love for all things Die Hard. I was a huge Die Hard fan myself back in the days.

If you read The Deal, you know Logan has a serious crush on his best friend Garret’s girlfriend Hannah. In order for Logan not to have these misguided feelings for Hannah, he does what he does best, parties hard and gets laid. Until one day he accidentally ends up in Grace’s dorm room. Logan is already excited that Grace has an affinity towards action movies, so he decides to hang out with her. Logan finds Grace’s blabbering endearing, especially the Ted Bundy references (those had me laughing out loud). So things get a little hot and heavy between Logan and Grace, lots of first, second and some third base things (I know it’s a hockey book, but I had to put my baseball metaphors). Let’s just say he left Grace without the O and he knows it even though she lied about it. He will make it his mission because he is John Logan and he’s never left a woman wanting.

Grace still cannot believe she’s sought of hooked up with Logan and proceeds to tell her BFF Ramona (bad idea), well let’s just say that none of her so called friends believe said hook up and is being trashed via social media. Logan gets wind of this and rectifies the situation. I usually love the BFFs in books, but I DID NOT like Ramona.

While Grace and Logan continue to hang out, things got a little too serious for Logan and let’s just say that things took a turn that ended their hook ups.

The school year ends, Logan’s team made the frozen four, Grace decides to go to France for the Summer to visit her mom. After Logan has a heart-to-heart with Hannah, he realizes what he has lost. Seeing the light, he wants Grace, unfortunately she’s away. She won’t return his calls, texts etc. Grace comes back to Briar a new girl. She’s not going to let the Logans of the world deter her.

Logan has other things in mind. He’s determined to win Grace’s heart back. I loved how Grace gives Logan a “To-Do List” of things to show his affections. Throughout, you see their love for each other while Logan is also struggling with family issues. His dad is in need of some serious help, so much so, that Logan is foregoing going pro, that broke my heart.

I love Elle Kennedy’s writing style and if you’re not a fan of NA, she will make you love it. When writing her sex scenes she does it tastefully. Her storytelling does not lag either, you will be laughing out loud one minute and reaching for a tissue the next. I’m a big fan for sure. I cannot wait to add more of Ms. Kennedy’s books to my ever growing TBR list.

I will leave you with a few of my favorite quotes:

Grace mental dialogue: I just had an entire conversation with a cute guy without babbling incoherently. I deserve a frickin’ gold star for that.

This one was swoon worth, Logan talking live on the radio regarding Grace: “No, I’m talking about Grace,” Logan says, smiling through the glass. “Grace Elizabeth Ivers. The woman I love.”

Book Review: The Deal by Elle Kennedy

Title: The Deal (Off-Campus #1)

Rating: 5 stars

Synopsis
She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy…

Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice…even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.

…and it’s going to be oh so good.

All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.

Michelle's Review

At first glance, I really did not know what to expect from this book.  I always go into a book with no expectations, I rarely read anyone’s review prior to delving into a book.  I usually go by the synopsis to see if it will reel me into reading.  Boss lady Grace told me that she was hearing really good things about this book already.  Having said that, I could not wait to start reading this wonderful book.  Yes, wonderful.

You will fall in love with Hannah from the very beginning.  She is a junior in college majoring in music.  She is also very smart and very sarcastic.  Although she faced a painful past, she did not let it define her, or made her feel sorry for herself.  She has only had two relationships, and because the former boyfriend could not deal with Hannah’s “issue”, he broke up with her.  Instead, Hannah is determined to win the winter showcase at school to help pay for her tuition and surround herself with her artsy friends.

Garrett Graham, oh man, I am swooning just thinking about him right about now.  He is the Captain of his school hockey team, Mr. Popularity, but he is failing his ethics class.  In order for him to stay on the team, he needs to pick up his grades.  When he stumbles upon Hannah’s passing grade, he will do anything in his power to have her help him pass the ethics class.

Hannah knows all about Garrett and his player ways, so when Garrett all but steam rolls into her life and almost becomes a permanent fixture everywhere she goes, begging her to tutor her him, she undoubtedly gives up the fight and helps Garrett out. Here is a funny exchange between Hannah and Garret: “For the love of God, I’m not tutoring you.” “Sure you are.” I shrug. “I just need to figure out what you want in return.” “I want to not tutor you. That’s what I want.” Like I said, she ends up tutoring Garett.

These two become attached to the hip until Garret notices that Hannah has the hots for someone on the football team.  He antes up their friendship with a Deal.  If Hannah helps him pass ethics, he will make sure that the star wide receiver will pay attention to Hannah because hello, guys always want what they can’t have, right?

Although this friends with benefits situation is all well and good, Garret is still a guy. His internal monologue is hysterical, case in point: “Yes, Hannah and I are friends. In fact, she’s the only female friend I’ve ever had. And yes, I want to keep being Hannah’s friend. But…I also want to sleep with her.”

Eventually, these two start getting really intense feelings for each other.  They help each other out emotionally as well as physically.  Oh did I mention Garrett’s father is a real douche bag? Oh he is big time. Not a very nice man at all and he will test Garrett and Hannah’s relationship.  Hannah does see the good in Garrett  “You’re a good person.”… “You’re honest and kind and compassionate.” … I mean, don’t get me wrong, you’re a total dick sometimes, but it’s tolerable kind of dickishness.” God that was one of my favorite lines.

I loved how Ms. Kennedy kept me captivated throughout.  I found myself not wanting to put the book down especially when I had things to do around the house.  Although you can put this in the NA category of romance, the sex scenes were hot and very well written.

There is an HEA, so do not fret.  My understanding is that Ms. Kennedy is writing a series with the secondary characters from the book, so you can read this as a standalone, but I would totally suggest reading the others to come, I know I will.  I cannot wait for The Mistake which comes out in the Spring!
