CHARACTER INTERVIEW WITH THE ADDICTED GUYS –
LOREN, CONNOR, RYKE

@kbritchie

Interview

Grace stumbles into the room with Yaya pushing her from behind.  Yaya smiles at the Addicted men with a Cheshire grin while Grace openly gawks at Lo, turning the shade of a tomato and shifting foot to foot.  Yaya wakes her up from her nervous state, yelling “THE SHORTIES ARE IN THE HOUSE, LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!!!”  She then proceeds to try to sit on Connor’s lap.

Grace: “Uh, hi guys.  Thanks for meeting with the Shorties today.” *gulps*  “Let’s just rip off the bandaid . . .”

Can you ever forgive Jonathan Hale?

Ryke: *goes quiet *

Loren: It’s complicated, and no one has to forgive him if they don’t want to.

Sum up The Queen in five words.
The eighth Original Sinners book.
(Sorry, I’m a smartass).

If you were stranded on an island with one of your characters, who would you pick and why?
Kingsley because of all the Sinners, he’s the one who has the strongest survival skills. He could keep me alive. And bang me. But also keep me alive.

This is the first BDSM series I have read that tied so strongly with the Bible.  Was this your intention from the beginning?  How much of the Bible stories did you research and how much was from your personal knowledge?
I started writing THE SIREN while I was attending seminary if that answers your question.

It’s Halloween at the 8th Circle. What will Nora and Kingsley wear? (We know Soren wouldn’t dress up)
That’s where you’re wrong. Of course Soren would dress up. If you read “Christmas in Suite 37A,” last year’s Original Sinners Christmas story, you’ll hear from Griffin about a wild Halloween party where Kingsley dressed like a priest, Soren dressed like Kingsley, Nora dressed like Slash and Sheridan dressed like Axl Rose.

Michelle
Tiffany I still am thinking about The Queen and cannot wait to purchase it so I can re-read it over and over again.  I still cannot believe that this is the “last book”, yup, I put it in quotes because in my heart, I know you may give us some more eventually down the line.  Anywho, here goes:
Although Original Sinners may be done, are you looking into possibly writing a book from any of the secondary characters down the road?
It’s always possible but currently not anything I want to do or plan to do. I’d love to write more Original Sinners books eventually but The Virgin and The Queen were the two hardest most frustrating novels I’ve ever written. I need a break for awhile to write outside this universe. Someday I’ll come back to it with a fresh brain and new ideas.

What are you working on currently?
I just completed POINSETTIA, this year’s Original Sinners Christmas story, told from the point-of-view of Magdalena, Soren’s friend and teacher from his seminary days. She taught him how to be a good sadist. This story takes place when Soren is 20 and you’ll be able to read it for free this December.

YaYa
Do you have any plans to write another Rom-Com?
Yes! I love writing rom-coms. I had the most fun writing “Seize the Night,” my modern gender-swapped very silly Romeo & Juliet retelling.

Will any of your leading characters become parents in the future?
None of them that aren’t currently parents.

Who is going to win the World Series?
The real winner of every baseball game is the women who get to see those glorious baseball butts in those tight tight pants.

Tammy
Are any scenes or moments in the series from personal experiences in and out of the bedroom, or playroom or a Rolls Royce?
Maybe……..

How do you choose your characters names and looks and status?
Names are very important. Names are everything. I spend a lot of time thinking and pondering and looking at baby name books and lists until I find the perfect name. You sort of get a vague image of a character in your head and as you write, that character turns into a person you can see as if he or she is standing in front of you.

Is there anything that you wished you would have added to any of the books, or a character trait, or scene?
There were a few scenes I wish I could have written. I did write the “Kingsley and Nora get stoned in a bathtub” scene for The Queen but edited it out.

All the characters take a vacation together, where do they go and what 2 toys do they bring with them?
They would all go to the south of France and visit Nico and his vineyard. Kingsley would never leave him without a flogger. Nora must have her crop. Soren loves his razor blades.

Is there anything that you want us to know about the series? Hidden secrets?
I almost gave Soren a pet dog. It was my way of working through my intense desire to own an Irish deerhound. But I didn’t do it. I edited that out too.

What is the strangest thing a fan has asked you?
Did you base the series on Depeche Mode songs? Answer? No. Maybe Pet Shop Boys songs, but no Depeche Mode. Don’t be ridiculous.

What is the strangest thing a fan has given you?
That’s a hard one. I get a lot of weird gifts. But the funniest gift was when a fan from Kentucky came to see me in NYC and asked if I wanted anything from Kentucky. I asked for Grippo’s which is a kind of local potato chip and she actually brought them. A fan also brought me an Oreo Blizzard to a signing and God, I love that woman.

What is the strangest thing a fan has shown you?
A “fan’ sent me naked pictures of herself which is not cool. Absolutely not cool. You do  not ever send unsolicited naked pictures to anyone, not even the erotica author. I have the internet. I can find my own porn.

☆ ☆ ☆ Author Spotlight: Nashoda Rose @nashodarose ☆ ☆ ☆

Several years ago, a book called Torn From You appeared on NetGalley.  Yaya  reaced out to Nashoda and got a copy of the prequel.  After reading that prequel, With You, there was no way to NOT read the next book.  A fighter, musican, and sex slavery.  That’s a lot of romance themes, but Nashoda made it work.  It was dark and sexy and we wanted more. Thankfully, this was just the beginning of a great series that always has kept us guessing.  And now Yaya is one of her beta readers!

Nashoda has been a supporter of our blog from the beginning, so its time to give some of that love and support back!

Interview

Describe your last release in 5 words or less (include title of book). What are you currently writing?

Nashoda: “Shattered by You” Damaged. Strength.

How did you decide on writing in the dark romance genre?

Nashoda: I didn’t decide. The characters lead me there. When I started the novella “With You” I had no plan except Logan was a damaged underground fighter/lead singer and Emily had a deep passion for horses. They told me their story and boy was it a wild ride, lol.

Who was/is your favorite character to write?

Nashoda: 100% Kai

What was the hardest scene you’ve ever written (without spoilers)?

Nashoda: Without spoilers…? Logan’s POV “Don’t Let Them Breathe” which is a scene I wrote at the request of Totally Booked Blog. I love that they asked me to write a Logan POV because it made me dig deep into one of the most emotional scenes in the book “Torn from You”. I now have it posted on my website.

Would you ever want your books to be made into a movie/TV series?  If so, what series and do you already have actors/actresses in mind?

Nashoda: Movie/TV series….I feel incredibly lucky to be able to write every single day and in a way I’d fear losing that with such a huge opportunity. But WOW ,if that ever came to the table, I’d be honored. I think The Scars of the Wraiths would make a great TV series and the Unyielding series would be a thrilling three part movie.

What is your favorite dark read by another author?

Nashoda:  Damn, really? I’m in awe of so many fantastic dark romance authors. Okay, I’m going to tell you my most memorable, “The Tied Man” by Tabitha McGowan. This book was so beautifully written, incredibly emotional and a year later I still remember some of those scenes. I read it every other night because I couldn’t handle the darkness, but that right there is a brilliant author because I felt everything. I cried, hurt and I didn’t want to go back, but I needed to. I had to. A must read for dark romance readers.

Do you read romance books out of your genre?  If so, which is your favorite?

Nashoda: I prefer the lighter reads when I’m in deep writing and Tijan’s Fallen Crest series is one of my favorites.

Do you celebrate Halloween?  If yes, what was your favorite costume to dress up in?

Nashoda:  I don’t celebrate anymore. But a number of years ago I was ‘half-asleep’ which was so much fun. So, half of me was all dressed up and looking sexy (heheh) and the other half I wore pajamas, had matted hair and no make- up. I had to cut clothes and sew them together to make it work… but it was wicked.

Name one thing you are afraid of (spiders, clowns, etc.).

Nashoda: Spiders

Vampires, werewolves or other?

Nashoda: Other: The Scars 😉

Favorite scary movie?

Nashoda: The Shining

Final question: who is your favorite Star Wars character?

Nashoda: Han Solo

Thanks Nashoda!

Book Title: With You (Tear Asunder #0.5)
Genre: Dark Romance
Length: 65 pages

Synopsis

Sculpt is an illegal fighter.

He’s also the lead singer of a local rock band.

No one knows his real name.

And from the moment I met him, he made me forget mine.

In order to convince Sculpt to give me self-defense lessons, I had to follow his one rule—no complaining or he’d walk. I didn’t think it would be a problem. I could handle a few bruises. What I hadn’t anticipated was landing on my back with Sculpt on top of me and my entire body burning up for him.

I tried to ignore it.

I failed of course. And having a hot, tattooed badass on top of me week after week, acting completely immune to what he was doing to my body—it was frustrating as hell, so I broke his rule—I complained.

Then he kissed me.

Author’s Note: This novella is Sculpt and Emily’s beginning and how they met. It is an extra and not required to be read before “Torn from You”. Their story and what happens to them is the novel “Torn from You”.

*Warning* Huge cliff-hanger. Like huge! But “With You” and “Torn from You” are released on the same day.*

Book Title: Torn From You (Tear Asunder #1)
Genre: Dark Romance
Length: 305 pages

Synopsis

Love is like an avalanche. It hits hard, fast and without mercy.

At least it did for me when Sculpt, the lead singer of the rock band Tear Asunder knocked me off my feet. Literally, because he’s also a fighter, illegally of course, and he taught me how to fight. He also taught me how to love and I fell hard for him. I mean the guy could do sweet, when he wasn’t doing bossy, and I like sweet.

Then it all shattered.

Kidnapped.
Starved.
Beaten.
I was alone and fighting to survive.
When I heard Sculpt’s voice, I thought he was there to save me.

I was wrong.

(It is highly recommended to read “With You” the novella first).

*Warning: This book contains some disturbing situations, strong language and sexual content. Over 18 years.

This is a love story with some dark elements. Dark contemporary romance. No cliffhanger and next in the Tear Asunder series is Ream’s story (the band’s lead guitarist).

Synopsis

Love is ugly and secrets will destroy you.

KAT
I don’t beg.
I don’t cry.
And I don’t give second chances.

Ream, the lead guitarist of the rock band Tear Asunder, deserves a gold medal for best dick move ever when he ran the moment he discovered my secret after two days of hot sex. Then he brings some chick to my coming home party from the hospital—after being shot.
I hate him.

Until …

Ream’s six foot two frame unfolds out of the car after being gone on tour for eight months. I stared. And in my defense, any girl would stare. It would almost be rude not to because Ream was the type of guy who stood out. Not because he was loud and obnoxious. No, it was because he was the complete opposite. Subtle and dangerously quiet. If he spoke, you’d better hope he liked you because otherwise you’d be falling at his feet begging for mercy. Except me … I don’t beg—ever.
But when our eyes locked, it was Ream’s steady confidence that had my nerves shooting off like jet sprinklers.

Then…

Ream told me he didn’t need a second chance because he was still working on his first.

REAM
Sex is ugly. It’s using someone for your own narcissistic pleasure. I did it, but hated it—until her. She was unfuckinexpected. Then I had to wreck our beginning with my screwed up past. I don’t deserve her, but I’m selfish and I’m taking her anyway. This is who I am and it’s too late to change me.

☆ ☆ ☆ Author Spotlight: CJ Roberts @AuthorCJRoberts ☆ ☆ ☆

As far as we are concerned, the Dark Duet series by this author is the GOLD standard for dark romances.  Will you be unconfortable or upset at times?  Yes.  Will you fall in love with Caleb?  Maybe.  Either way, this author will put you and Livvie through a heart-pounding, thought provoking, emotional ride.  Just what you’d expect from a dark romance.

On top of writing one the best series’ in this genre, the author is sweet as can be and I (Grace) adore her style!  We are thrilled to interview her for our Month of Darkness – I think you’ll enjoy her answers as much as we did!

Interview

Describe your last release in 5 words or less (include title of book).

CJ: Filthy, uncompromising, guy-guy-girl captive smut. “Determined to Obey”, Nov 2014

What are you currently writing?

CJ: A prequel to a novel very few people will read because of its sheer taboo audacity!! I’ve halted work on my COMMITMENT project.

How did you decide on writing in the dark romance genre?

CJ: I didn’t. It’s just how my work is categorized most often. I don’t write for a category. I blend the incredibly taboo with the sexy, and throw in real-world horror because it’s the only thing I CAN do. If I could write for the mainstream, I would. That’s where the masses are. That’s where the movie money is, lol. I’d love to be able to write a nice, sweet, smoldering romance where the hero is good and the villain is bad, and the love is deep and true, and one of them dies of a horrible disease because Nicholas Sparks and John Greene are brilliant assholes… but all my attempts are horrible!

Who was/is your favorite character to write?

CJ: Who knows? I fall in love so many times and I never really fall out.

What was the hardest scene you’ve ever written (without spoilers)?

CJ: In “Seduced in the Dark”, Livvie describes having a dream about someone she’s lost. I wept the entire time because it’s based on a dream I have sometimes where I’m chasing my father to give him a hug and I can never catch  up to him (he passed away several years ago). It’s not even a big deal in the book, just a paragraph, but I remember feeling drained afterward.

Where are you in the process for putting the Dark Duet series on the small screen?  Do you have a dream cast?

CJ: The last I heard (March), they were looking for a show-runner and putting together a package. While I don’t want to raise any false hopes, I’m cautiously optimistic that something will happen. I do have a dream cast though, and you can nominate yours on The IF List: http://www.iflist.com/stories/thedarkduetseries

What is your favorite dark read by another author?

CJ: “Insidious” by Aleatha Romig or “Under Mr. Nolan’s Bed” by Selena Kitt

Do you read romance books out of your genre?  If so, which is your favorite?

CJ: Almost all the books I read are outside my genre. My favorite is M/M romance, paranormal, sci-fi, fantasy, and yaoi manga. In that order. Followed by heterosexual paranormal romance, and dark as f**k erotica. I’m shocked I write men/women relationships.

Do you celebrate Halloween?  If yes, what was your favorite costume to dress up in?

CJ: Yes and I once went as Frank N’ Furter from “The Rock Horror Picture Show”

Name one thing you are afraid of (spiders, clowns, etc.).

CJ: Focused attention. QUICK! LOOK OVER THERE!

Vampires, werewolves or other?

CJ: Other. I’ve always wanted to have a meaningful relationship with one of the fringe supernatural species; maybe a nice tentacle monster who just wants to tie me down, feel me up, and drench me in viscous goo that is both nourishing and depleting. Seriously, who needs conversation? Oh and… Thanks, Japan.

Favorite scary movie?

CJ: Pet Sematary (I can spell, that’s the movie title)

Final question: who is your favorite Star Wars character?

CJ: Darth Vader. I want him to rail me with all his stuff on.

Thanks CJ!

Caleb is a man with a singular interest in revenge. Kidnapped as a young boy and sold into slavery by a power-hungry mobster, he has thought of nothing but vengeance. For twelve years he has immersed himself in the world of pleasure slaves searching for the one man he holds ultimately responsible. Finally, the architect of his suffering has emerged with a new identity, but not a new nature. If Caleb is to get close enough to strike, he must become the very thing he abhors and kidnap a beautiful girl to train her to be all that he once was.

Eighteen-year-old Olivia Ruiz has just woken up in a strange place. Blindfolded and bound, there is only a calm male voice to welcome her. His name is Caleb, though he demands to be called Master. Olivia is young, beautiful, naïve and willful to a fault. She has a dark sensuality that cannot be hidden or denied, though she tries to accomplish both. Although she is frightened by the strong, sadistic, and arrogant man who holds her prisoner, what keeps Olivia awake in the dark is her unwelcome attraction to him.

Synopsis

BOOK TWO OF THE DARK DUET
The exciting, titillating, and action-filled conclusion to Captive in the Dark.

What is the price of redemption?

Rescued from sexual slavery by a mysterious Pakistani officer, Caleb carries the weight of a debt that must be paid in blood.

The road has been long and fraught with uncertainty, but for Caleb and Livvie, it’s all coming to an end.

Can he surrender the woman he loves for the sake of vengeance?

Or will he make the ultimate sacrifice?

Quote:
It seemed to Caleb, the nature of human beings revolved around one empirical truth: we want what we cannot have. For Eve, it was the fruit of the forbidden tree. For Caleb, it was Livvie.

Book Title: Epilogue (The Dark Duet #3)
Genre: Dark Romance
Length: 209 pages

Synopsis

I’m writing this because you begged. You know how I love the begging. In fact, you probably know too many things and know them far too well. Who am I? Well, that’s what I’m trying to figure out. I was a whore in my youth, a killer since my adolescence, and a monster as a man. I am the man who kidnapped Livvie. I am the man who held her in a dark room for weeks. But, most importantly, I am the man she loves. She loves me. It’s quite sick, isn’t it? Of course, there’s more to our story than can be surmised in a few short sentences, but I’m at a loss for justifying my behavior back then. I assume if you’re reading this, I don’t need to make those justifications. You’ve already made your own. You’re reading this because you want to know about the rest of the story. You want to know what happened that warm summer night in September of 2010, the night I met Livvie at The Paseo. It was the night my life changed all over again. It didn’t happen exactly as Livvie said. She’s been very kind to me in the retelling of our story. The truth is far more…complicated.

Book Title: Determined to Obey (The Dark Duet #3.5)
Genre: Dark Romance
Length: 79 pages

Synopsis

☆ ☆ ☆ Author Spotlight: Pepper Winters @pepperwinters ☆ ☆ ☆

About two years ago, I (Grace) saw some chatter about this book, Tears for Tess.  I knew right away that it was Yaya’s kind of book, so I told her about it, and the rest is history.  She went on and on about this book, convincing everyone to read it. Who would have guessed, that would have led to Yaya being one of Pepper’s beta readers.

While Q might not make every book boyfriend list (he’s near the top of Yaya’s list), I personally can appreciate good writing when I see it.  I was a fan with the Monster’s in the Dark series, and after the Indebted series, she has become an automatic 1-click author for me.  Not only does she have a wicked mind, but describes horrific events with a beautiful prose.

We are so excited to have the opportunity to interview Pepper, a Shortie Fave!  And if you haven’t had the chance to read her work, scroll thru this post, and 1-click away.  We promise you won’t be disappointed!

Interview

Describe your last release in 5 words or less (include title of book).

Pepper: FOURTH DEBT. Sinfully dark but full of heart.

What are you currently writing?

Pepper: FINAL DEBT the last book in the Indebted Series.

How did you decide on writing in the dark romance genre?

Pepper: I’ve always been drawn to it. I love the darker subjects as it allows me to really get into the characters mind.

Who was/is your favorite character to write?

Pepper: Q and Jethro are by far my most favourite to write.

What was the hardest scene you’ve ever written (without spoilers)?

Pepper: Probably the last scene in Quintessentially Q when Tess does something to Q in order to come back to him.

Would you ever want your books to be made into a movie/TV series?  If so, what series and do you already have actors/actresses in mind?

Pepper: HELL YES!! TV series would be amazing. No idea about actors though 🙂

What is your favorite dark read, by another author?

Pepper: I really like Escape from Paradise by Gwendolyn Field

Do you read romance books out of your genre?  If so, which is your favorite?

Pepper: Yes, I can’t name a favourite. WAY too hard 🙂

Do you celebrate Halloween?  If yes, what was your favorite costume to dress up in?

Pepper: No, I was born and raised in Hong Kong and it’s not celebrated over there so never got into it. I feel like I’m missing out though!!

Name one thing you are afraid of (spiders, clowns, etc.).

Pepper: Heights.

Vampires, werewolves or other?

Pepper: Oh, tough choice. Both lol

Favorite scary movie?

Pepper: My mind has gone blank. I think….Jurassic Park (not that it’s scary but just OMG so good)

Final question: who is your favorite Star Wars character?

Pepper: I want to say Darth Vader as I liked his story as Aniken. But not sure if that’s allowed… go C3PO. 🙂

Thanks Pepper!

Author Spotlight (Interview): Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

1h

☆ ☆ ☆ Author Spotlight: @SarinaBowen and @ElleKennedy ☆ ☆ ☆

The Shorties (and the NOT so short one Rachel, lol) are extremely excited to have Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy here with us today. If you are on Facebook, you may know they are two of the many coaches of The Locker Room. Grace, Ivy and myself have read most of their sports romance books, especially their collaborative book “Him” which came out on July 28, 2015. “Shorties Approved”. If you haven’t one-clicked “Him” yet, we all suggest you do so, HOT!

Interview

What inspired your collaboration?

Sarina: I’m going to let Elle answer this one. It was really her idea!

Elle: I’ve wanted to write a m/m for a while, but it never seemed to be a good fit for any of my current series. So one day Sarina and I were joking around and somehow the idea of writing a m/m together came up. I didn’t think we were being serious, but the next thing I know, she’s emailing me with ideas. I took about two seconds to think about it, and then was like, “I’m in!”

How did your love of hockey begin?

Sarina: I grew up in Michigan, where hockey was everywhere. In fact, all the high schools had teams, yet I’d never seen a soccer game or a lacrosse stick. Loving hockey was just inevitable

Elle: I’m Canadian.

LOL, Elle.

Besides hockey, what other sports do you enjoy watching?

Sarina: Snow sports are really big in Vermont, and watching ski races and snowboard events is really fun. In fact, my son gave me the first line of one of my Gravity books when he was eight years old. He told me that the scariest moment in ski racing isn’t while you’re skiing–it’s when the person in line just before you is racing. Because all that adrenaline has nowhere to go.

Elle: NFL football! I’m a football nut (confession: I love it more than hockey…)

We all loved how you both managed to give Jamie such a cool family and showing some of the difficulties when coming out in professional sports. Any personal inspiration from your family?

Sarina: I come from a tiny family, but I always wanted one like Jamie’s.

Elle: I don’t have a big family, and I’ve always been jealous of those who do. I can’t remember who came up with the idea of Jamie having a million brothers and sisters (I think it might have been Sarina), but I loved the idea from the start, and developing the Canning clan was one of my favorite things about writing this book.

What’s their favorite hockey teams?

Sarina: I follow college hockey, and Yale is my team. One of the fun things about hockey is that small schools can compete at a high level. It’s not a money sport like football.

Elle: Boston Bruins.

What has been most challenging about writing?

Sarina: Finishing things. Just like anything in life.

Elle: Deadlines. Having to force myself to write when I don’t feel inspired is really difficult sometimes, especially when a deadline is looming over my head.

Do you listen to music while writing and if so, what type of music do you listen to?

Sarina: I need silence. Even instrumental music distracts me.

Elle: I write in silence!

Would you consider writing another book together?

Sarina: Heck yeah!

Elle: Abso-frickin-lutely.

I (Michelle) know the answer to this question, but for your readers, when writing “Him” did either of you write Jaime and Ryan’s POV or did you both pick off where the other left off?

Sarina: We both wrote both perspectives, trading after approximately 2000 words. Elle has co-written before, so she knew what to do.

Elle: We wrote both POVS. I think the first scene I wrote was the opening chapter in Wes’s POV, and Sarina did the next chapter with Jamie. Then we switched off so we’d both get a sense of the other character’s thoughts. After that, we would write whoever and stop whenever, and the other one would pick up the torch.

Rapid Fire Questions

Favorite author?

Sarina: I won’t pick. You can’t make me. 🙂

Elle: I can’t pick just one.

Favorite romance book?

Sarina: See above

Elle: Wanderlust by Danielle Steel.

Current read?

Sarina: Jen Frederick’s SACKED.

Elle: Captive by Brighton Walsh

Biggest vice?

Sarina: Caffeine

Elle: Smoking

Favorite musician?

Sarina: Eh, Hozier?

Elle: Too many to name!

Coke or Pepsi?

Sarina: tonic with gin in it.

Elle: Coke

Favorite Actor to play Batman?

Sarina: Um…?

Elle: Keaton, hands down.

Favorite Star Wars character?

Sarina: Chewbacca

Elle: I’m not a Star Wars fan! I guess I’d pick Han Solo because that’s one of the only character names I know.

Thanks ladies!

The sport she loves is out of reach. The boy she loves has someone else.

What now?

She expected to start Harkness College as a varsity ice hockey player. But a serious accident means that Corey Callahan will start school in a wheelchair instead.

Across the hall, in the other handicapped-accessible dorm room, lives the too-delicious-to-be real Adam Hartley, another would-be hockey star with his leg broken in two places. He’s way out of Corey’s league.

Also, he’s taken.

Nevertheless, an unlikely alliance blooms between Corey and Hartley in the “gimp ghetto” of McHerrin Hall. Over tequila, perilously balanced dining hall trays, and video games, the two cope with disappointments that nobody else understands.

They’re just friends, of course, until one night when things fall apart. Or fall together. All Corey knows is that she’s falling. Hard.

But will Hartley set aside his trophy girl to love someone as broken as Corey? If he won’t, she will need to find the courage to make a life for herself at Harkness — one which does not revolve around the sport she can no longer play, or the brown-eyed boy who’s afraid to love her back.

A blind date. A nervous sorority girl. A mean-spirited fraternity prank. What could possibly go wrong?

As a sorority pledge, there are commandments that Katie Vickery must live by. One: thou shalt not show up for the party without a date. Two: the guy shall be an athlete, preferably an upperclassman.

Unfortunately, Katie just broke up with her jerkface football player boyfriend. Even worse, her last encounter with him resulted in utter humiliation. She’d rather hide under the bed than attend a party where he’ll be.

Yet staying home would mean letting him win.

Enjoying herself tonight was out of the question. She could only hope to get through the evening without her blind date noticing that he was spending the evening with a crazy person.

Andrew Baschnagel is living proof that nice guys don’t finish first. He’s had his eye on Katie since the moment her long legs waltzed into his art history class. So when her roommate sets Andy up to be Katie’s date, he’d be crazy to say no. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a lot of practice with either girls or parties. Yet.

Book Title: The Understatement of the Year (The Ivy Years #3)
Genre: Sports Romance
Length: 300 pages

Synopsis

What happened in high school stayed in high school. Until now.

Five years ago, Michael Graham betrayed the only person who ever really knew him. Since then, he’s made an art of hiding his sexuality from everyone. Including himself.

So it’s a shock when his past strolls right into the Harkness College locker room, sporting a bag of hockey gear and the same slow smile that had always rendered Graham defenseless. For Graham, there is only one possible reaction: total, debilitating panic. With one loose word, the team’s new left wing could destroy Graham’s life as he knows it.

John Rikker is stuck being the new guy. Again. And it’s worse than usual, because the media has latched onto the story of the only “out” player in Division One hockey. As the satellite trucks line the sidewalk outside the rink, his new teammates are not amused.

And one player in particular looks sick every time he enters the room.

Rikker didn’t exactly expect a warm welcome from Graham. But the guy won’t even meet his eyes. From the looks of it, his former… best friend / boyfriend / whatever isn’t doing so well. He drinks too much and can’t focus during practice.

Either the two loneliest guys on the team will self destruct from all the new pressures in their lives, or they can navigate the pain to find a way back to one another. To say that it won’t be easy is the Understatement of the Year.

THIS BOOK IS A STANDALONE. NO CLIFFHANGERS. NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.

Warning: unlike the other books in this series, this heartbreaking love story is about two guys. Contains sexual situations, dance music, snarky t-shirts and a poker-playing grandmother.

Author Spotlight (Interview): Emma Chase

Emma

Today we are honored to be featuring Emma Chase in our Author Spotlight.  This author really doesn’t need an introduction, but we’ll do one anyway, ‘cuz that’s how we roll.

Once in a blue moon, a book is released into the romance book world that everyone talks about.  Tangled was one of those books.  Not only did we get a healthy dose of laughs with Drew and his schenaigans, but we found a new author who could nail the male POV.  These authors are rare folks.

With the Tangled series and her new Legal Briefs series, Emma has shown she keep up the laughs, add make us continually update our book boyfriend list.  Just see the Sustained review to see what I mean.

Thank you Emma for taking the time and answering some questions.

Interview

What inspired you to write the Legal Briefs series?  Do you have any legal background?
I wanted to be a lawyer when I was very young, but no – no background. The idea of three hot-shot, young attorneys came to me when I was in Washington DC for a book signing. It’s a young, attractive city – with the most lawyers per capita than any state/district in the country.

Are you already planning on what to write after the Legal Briefs series?  If so, can you give us a hint?
I have a bunch of ideas for new standalones. I also have ideas for a possible Legal Briefs novella because these characters aren’t ready to say goodbye just yet. And I’m always working here and there on a few stories that would bring us back to the Tangled crowd.

What has been most challenging about writing?
Time management. Staying on task, on time and organized.

Do you listen to music while writing and if so, what type of music do you listen to?
I listen to music before I write. Over and over again. The type of music depends on the mood of the scene. During Sustained I listened to Shut up and Dance With Me by Walk the Moon, Closer by Better Than Ezra, Desperado by Linda Ronstadt and House of Pain by White Buffalo.

Who was your favorite character to write about so far?
Jake. He’s complicated and amazingly layered but he’s really funny and sexy and he has this rough edge about him too, which makes him such a rich character to write.

Being inside Drew’s head was something else.  Not many authors can write the male POV and you nailed it.  How did you do it?  Did you consult with a lot of men?
Thank you! It was just as great for me to write from Drew’s head as it was for you to read it! I don’t honestly know how it happens – I was very close with a few guy friends growing up, so their voices are definitely buzzing around my head. For me, there’s a freedom in writing from the male POV. My guy characters are all bold and over-confident – they believe no matter what they say or do, readers are going to love them anyway. That makes for some really easy flowing, no boundaries kind of writing that is pure fun.

If Tangled became a movie and/or mini series, who do you see playing Drew and Kate?  (Personally we see Ian Somerhalder for Drew, we don’t have a Kate though).
I have such problems doing casting – because I always pick actors closer to my age (Bradley Cooper & Kate Beckinsale) as opposed to the age of the characters. In Tangled, Drew’s 28 and Kate’s 25 – that seems so young to me now, lol. I think Chris Evans would make a good Drew and Nina Dobrev would be beautiful as Kate.

Same question for Overruled, one of our reviewers keeps picturing a young Josh Lucas for Stanton, and maybe a younger Eva Mendes for Sofia.
OMG – Josh Lucas and Eva Mendes are amazing choices!! I approve. Scott Eastwood would be a really good Stanton too. For Sustained I would love Theo James for Jake and Jennifer Lawrence as Chelsea.

Rapid Fire Questions

Favorite author?
Gah – sooo hard (that’s what she said). Johanna Lindsey.

Favorite romance book?
Gentle Rogue by Johanna Lindsey and The Bride by Julie Garwood

Current read?
NUTS by Alice Clayton. Go ahead – be jealous.

Biggest vice?
Caffeine

Favorite musician?
I go through fazes. I was on a huge Air Supply kick recently. I think Eminem is a genius, I sing Tom Petty in my car with the windows down and I’ve never heard a Bon Jovi song I didn’t like. I’ve just recently discovered Ed Sheeran (he’s amazing) and I find One Direction songs fantastically addictive. I also listen to showtunes from Les Miserables and Wicked almost every day (I sing those too – sooo badly).

Favorite candy?
Anything fruity/chewy – Swedish fish, Mike & Ike’s, fruit snacks.

Coke or Pepsi?
Pepsi

Favorite Star Wars character?
On this, Drew Evans and I agree. Han Solo – no contest. He’s so cool. And handsome, and clever and loyal.

Thank you again Emma for hanging out with us and answering our questions.

Book Title: Tangled (Tangled #1)
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Length: 254 pages

Synopsis

Drew Evans is a winner. Handsome and arrogant, he makes multimillion dollar business deals and seduces New York’s most beautiful women with just a smile. He has loyal friends and an indulgent family. So why has he been shuttered in his apartment for seven days, miserable and depressed?

He’ll tell you he has the flu.

But we all know that’s not really true.

Katherine Brooks is brilliant, beautiful and ambitious. She refuses to let anything – or anyone – derail her path to success. When Kate is hired as the new associate at Drew’s father’s investment banking firm, every aspect of the dashing playboy’s life is thrown into a tailspin. The professional competition she brings is unnerving, his attraction to her is distracting, his failure to entice her into his bed is exasperating.

Then, just when Drew is on the cusp of having everything he wants, his overblown confidence threatens to ruin it all. Will he be able untangle his feelings of lust and tenderness, frustration and fulfillment? Will he rise to the most important challenge of his life?

Can Drew Evans win at love?

Tangled is not your mother’s romance novel. It is an outrageous, passionate, witty narrative about a man who knows a lot about women…just not as much as he thinks he knows. As he tells his story, Drew learns the one thing he never wanted in life, is the only thing he can’t live without.

There are two kinds of people in the world. The ones who look first, and the ones who leap. I’ve always been more of a looker. Cautious. A planner. That changed after I met Drew Evans. He was so persistent. So sure of himself – and of me.

Drew already made his –in fact, he tried to decide for the both of us. But you know that’s just not my style. So I came back to Greenville. Alone. Well, sort of alone….

Book Title: Tamed (Tangled #3)
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Length: 256 pages

Synopsis

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: girl meets player, they fall in love, player changes his ways.

It’s a good story. But it’s not our story. Ours is a lot more colorful.

When I met Dee I knew right away that she was special. When she met me, she thought I was anything but special—I was exactly like every other guy who’d screwed her over and let her down. It took some time to convince her otherwise, but turns out I can make a convincing argument when sex is at stake.

You might know where this story’s headed. But the best part isn’t where we ended up.

It’s how we got there.

TAMED goes back in time to the Tangled days. But this time around, it’s not Drew dishing out the advice and opinions—it’s his best friend Matthew, who of course is dealing with Dee Dee.

Synopsis

In the fourth sexy romance by the New York Times bestselling author of Tangled and Twisted, Drew and Kate can’t wait to tie the knot—if they can survive the pre-wedding festivities.

For most of my life, I never imagined I’d get married. But Kate did the impossible: she changed me. I think we can all agree I was pretty frigging awesome before, but now I’m even better.

The road to this day wasn’t all rainbows and boners. There were mistakes and misunderstandings worthy of a Greek tragedy. But Kate and I made it through with our inexhaustible lust, boundless admiration, and everlasting love for one another intact.

That being said, there were some unexpected incidents in Vegas last weekend that could have been a problem. It was kind of… my final test.

Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Book Title: Sustained (Legal Briefs #2)
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Length: 304 pages

Synopsis

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

Michelle's Review

It has been over a year Massage therapist Muriel Stewart since she has stepped foot at Pandora’s Playground, the most exclusive kink club in her area, since the passing her husband and Dom, Ian. She was called over to the club by one of Ian’s friend and partner Lucas. Well he sought of “ordered” her to come by, and being the true submissive that Muriel is, she needed to show her face. She is met by Lucas at the door as well as his other partner Mathew Galindo. While Lucas is all welcoming, Mathew is just brooding in the background.

Muriel has always wondered why Mathew had just a “dislike” towards her. Both Lucas and Mathew surprise Muriel with an added addition to Pandora’s Playground. She is immediately taken aback with the new installation of a bath house, created for aftercare, after a scene. The light BDSM scene between Lucas, Muriel and Mathew as pretty hot.

After getting into Mathew’s head, you get a sense regarding his unrequited love for Muriel. It was a little surprising as a reader, that a Dom like himself, had such self loathing. And although he tried to keep at arm’s length from Muriel, he couldn’t help his dominance over her. Their scenes together was pretty hot as well.

So my issue with the book, even though it was a good read, it seemed a bit rushed. It jumped like six months ahead. I really wanted to see how Muriel and Mathew’s love developed. I thought was going to be an issue with one of Muriel’s customer’s (which would have been a good angst moment IMO), but that was brushed away as well. One of my biggest pet peeves as a reader, is when a book ends at 88%. If I were to buy it, whether for 99 cents or $3.99, I do not like a book ending 80 something percent. Just no! I really do not want to see excerpts from the next book or even the previous book. Will I read the read of the books in the series, quite possible since I really want to see what Lucas’ story will be about.

Excerpt

“You need more than a Dom, angel. You need a permanent life partner. I assume you’ll want to remarry. You need someone to come home to at night… You deserve to be held while you’re sleeping… To have someone take care of you when you’re sick.”

She laughed. “Ian didn’t do all that. He didn’t like to be crowded in his sleep, and he didn’t have a clue how to take care of me when sick.”

Mathew swallowed and his jaw clenched. “If you were mine, I’d hold you all night, every night. And you can be damn sure I’d be right by your side, tending to your every need, if you were sick.”

“So why can’t you be mine? Permanently?”

“Because I don’t know how to do any of the other stuff a man is supposed to do for his wife. Hell, Muriel, I’ve never, ever taken a woman on a date.”

“Bullshit, you do know how to do those things. You’re just stuck on this endless loop of false thinking.” She drew in a deep breath and forced herself to calm. “As for dating… I know you’ve never gone on a real date.” When his eyes flared with surprise, she smiled and admitted, “I know more about you than you think. I’ve always been drawn to you and paid more attention than even I realized. I can show you how to date. Just give it… give us a try.”

His head went back and forth again, but hope flickered in his eyes and his chest rose and fell with shallow breaths as he considered her words.

After a moment, he said, “I’m always amazed by feminists who argue this lifestyle sets women back a hundred years. There isn’t a more kickass feminist on the planet than a sub. You may wear my cuffs and spend a tremendous amount of time on your knees, but you fucking own me. You’re the one who has me in chains, and there’s not a goddamned thing I can do about it.”

Her stomach bottomed out as her heart soared. She didn’t think for one second this would be easy—nothing worth fighting for was—but it sure sounded like he’d agreed to being more than temporary play partners, and joy launched her off the table and into his arms.

Interview

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

I started COVETED back in 2011 when my husband’s health took a bad turn. He’d battled a brain tumor since 2007, but in 2011 it started to grow and change into a more aggressive kind of tumor, and I was really scared about the future. About that same time, I read an article written by a slave whose Master died during 9/11. It got me to thinking about moving on after the loss of a soul mate and what it must be like for a submissive whose entire world revolves around her Master. Fortunately, once I started writing, Muriel and Mathew took over and made the story all theirs, so it didn’t become too personal for me.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere! LOL It might be from something I’ve read, a television show, or song lyrics. I’d say 80% of my story ideas come from songs. Carmella, in DARING MASQUERADE, was inspired by Katy Perry’s song “Darkhorse” and the line, “She’s a bitch. I call her Karma.”

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Description is the worst for me. Sometimes, as I go back through and read the first draft, I realize my characters are completely naked and floating around in nothing but white space. Then I struggle with the dilemma of how much description to add to make the setting come to life and how much is too much and boring. It’s a constant battle for me.

What are your current projects?

The next story I’m gearing up to write is EXPOSED (Pandora’s Playground #2)… Lucas Steele finally gets his HEA. After that, I’ll release STRIPPED (Pandora’s Playground #3) where Mercy from GOING ALL IN (Heat Wave Novel #3) will face her demons. I’m pretty sure there will be at least 1 more Pandora’s Playground story, but I might release one or two Heat Wave stories before the 4th Pandora’s Playground. I still have to write Heat Wave stories for Steve, Robby, and Tyler. 🙂

Author Spotlight (Interview): Rachel Blaufeld

Interview

Hey there followers of After Dark Book Lovers.  It has been awhile since the Shorties have done an Author’s Spotlight, we are so happy and honored to be featuring Rachel Blaufeld.  She recently released Vérité and both Grace and myself loved this book.  My first book of Rachel’s was Redemption Lane and [I] fell in love with her writing.  I know Rachel is currently working on the second novel to Redemption Lane which will feature Lane’s twin brother Jake.  If you check on Goodreads, she has also written Electrified (The Electric Tunnel, #1) and Smoldered (The Electric Tunnel, #2). Let’s get this party started.  Thank you Rachel for taking the time and answering some questions.

What made you become a writer, or rather, what inspired you?
Honestly, I’ve always been a dreamer. I used to make up stories in my head as I fell asleep when I was a young girl. Seriously!

Then, a few years ago, I fell into blogging and freelance writing…but I still had all these damn characters in my head! I started writing another book first––one I never published––before I wrote Electrified. I keep thinking I will go back to my first book…it was a second chance love story.

I never imagined I would love writing as much as I do, but honestly, there is nothing I’d rather do. And YES, I do spend a few days a month in my robe, drinking coffee and writing.

What has been most challenging about writing?
The hardest challenge for me is switching between my non-fiction and fiction voice. I still write a few freelance columns, and I have to write those on a day I’m not writing my characters. Otherwise, everything gets jumbled up!

So let’s discuss a little about your latest novel Vérité, for those who haven’t read it yet, can you give us a bit of background?
Vérité — little synopsis – Up until this point, I had only written bad boys/alpha males, and while Tiberius is an alpha, he is also very much a good guy. I thought it would be interesting to turn the tables and write a stand-up Hero. I guess for some, Tingly is frightening, weak with issues and not the fixer of the relationship, but to me she symbolized so many frailties of college-aged women.

I think many college girls question who they are, who they should love, and what their parents may or may not want for them. Even if they pretend to be strong, it’s not always the case.

So in real life, are you a basketball fan?
YEP! I love NCAA basketball and my oldest son plays ball (he is entering high school). I get way into it, cheering and yelling. My husband sometimes comments he cannot believe what a nutcase I am with all of it!

What made you write a sports theme book?
Honestly, it just felt right. I loved the whole college setting, and I knew more about basketball than any other sport.

Grace and I fell in love with Tiberius, who was your muse for him?  And who was your muse for Tingly?
For Tiberius, I didn’t really have one muse, I combined a number of basketball guys I know into one.

For Tingly, I was channeling Kate Bosworth circa Blue Crush.

Are you considering writing a book from any of the secondary characters, say for instance, Jamel?
Yes! I am going to write Jamel’s story and also I have a new player I am going to introduce.

What are you working on now?  If it’s Jake story, what can we expect?
I am wrapping up Jake’s story––Absolution Road. Jake’s love affair is not one of those slow-burn type affairs, but with Jake, it wouldn’t be. He is the impulsive brother, the guy with a temper but a gigantic heart. In Redemption Lane, he was the one to convince Bess to go after Lane. Without admitting it out loud, he believes in love, and when he finally recognizes he deserves it…holy hell, he goes after it!

This is an emotional series, full of angst and not for the weak at heart. I did cry a good bit writing this story – so don’t forget your tissues.

Are you writing full time?
I consider myself a full-time writer, full-time mom, and full-time advocate for women. In my other life, I help women build businesses while raising a family. I still consult with mom entrepreneurs, and I am a champion of women doing whatever their heart tells them to do.  Especially, if it is reading romance and drinking coffee!

Do you listen to music while writing and if so, what type of music do you listen to?
Yes. OMG, if you saw my collection, you would faint!  It is everything from Neil Diamond to Miley Cyrus to Rick Ross.

Lately, I’m obsessed with Taylor Swift and whenever I cannot find something to fit my mood, I turn to Fleetwood Mac.

Ok so now let’s have a little fun with rapid fire questions:

What are you currently reading?
The Girl in the Comfortable Quiet by Susan Ward. I love this series, and now it’s ending. L

Favorite Author and/or Book?
I really can’t answer this. Honestly, I have so many. I still read about four books a week (I’m not a big sleeper).

If you had a gun to my temple, I would probably say Are you there God, its me Margaret by Judy Blume. It was a game-changer back in the day for me.

Favorite Romance Novel?
Aaagh, no way I can pick one.

Favorite Musician?
All time favorite – Michael Jackson or Madonna (tough decision)

Biggest dislike?
People sneezing and coughing on me. *GERMAPHOBE

Coke or Pepsi?
Neither. Coffee with skim milk and no sweetner.

Carnivore or Vegetarian?
Carnivore.

Favorite Star Wars Character?  (This is a required Shorties question, just saying).
Definitely the Ewoks. My younger son loves these movies, and he allows his Ewok LEGO mini-figure to hang on my kitchen window ledge with Buzz Lightyear.

Thank you again Rachel for hanging out with us and answering our questions.

About

Rachel Blaufeld is a social worker/entrepreneur/blogger turned author. Fearless about sharing her opinion, Rachel captured the ear of stay-at-home and working moms on her blog, BacknGrooveMom, chronicling her adventures in parenting tweens and inventing a product, often at the same time. She has also blogged for The Huffington Post, Modern Mom, and StartupNation.

Turning her focus on her sometimes wild-and-crazy creative side, it only took Rachel two decades to do exactly what she wanted to do—write a fiction novel. Now she spends way too many hours in local coffee shops plotting her ideas. Her tales may all come with a side of angst and naughtiness, but end lusciously.

Rachel lives around the corner from her childhood home in Pennsylvania with her family and two dogs. Her obsessions include running, coffee, icing-filled doughnuts, antiheroes, and mighty fine epilogues.

Book Title: Smoldered (The Electric Tunnel #2)
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Length: 281 pages

Synopsis

**BOOK 2 in the Electric Tunnel Series — Can be read as a standalone.**

Asher Peterson is a self-made man, owner of the Electric Tunnel, Sin City’s hottest adult entertainment spot. Brazen and formidable in designer T-shirts and motorcycle boots, he seems unflappable whether he’s making his rounds through the decadent decor of the Tunnel, or whipping through the desert heat on his bike. But inside he is a shattered man, desperate to understand what unconditional love from a woman feels like.

Hiding the effects of his emotionally stunted youth behind a gritty persona, and keeping his fractured soul buried deep while seeking out his baser instincts, Asher is convinced he is man enough to leave the past in the past. The only clue to his broken soul is his deep-seated need to provide safety and a good life for emotionally damaged women within the glamorous walls of his strip club.

Fooling himself that he deserves little in life, Asher keeps his big heart tightly guarded with everyone but Sienna Flower, his friend, business partner, and headliner. Until, that is, the night he runs into his childhood friend, Natalie Parker. While trolling a rival strip club, perusing their offerings for his own personal pleasure, he collides with his past. Coming face-to-face with a woman he only knew as a girl, he’s shaken when he finds the dark-haired beauty in a precarious position. Now all grown up, she’s a hardened soul who reminds him of where he came from, and stirs within him the need to protect yet another woman.

Known as Nat to most everyone, Natalie is a single mom to Quinn. But when she’s under the bright spotlights in a thong, she’s known as Natasha or Nataleigh Dallas. A girl who once had everything going for her, she’s now a jaded stripper with only room for her son in her life, and has erected impenetrable barriers around her heart. The strength of those walls is challenged the night a man she has known since childhood steamrolls his way back into her life, flashing those smoky-gray eyes that have always melted her.

A man she has loved from afar since she was a young girl, one who lights fire to her walls, burning deeper, setting everything ablaze––smoldering her.

Asher and Natalie, two people who are equally tormented by their own demons, set out to rescue each other as part-time lovers in a torrid, desperate workplace affair. Thinking they can remain friends while keeping their hearts at a safe distance, they find themselves at odds when their situation morphs into a messy, tangled mess.

Ripping free of each other proves impossible as they learn that the very web that connects them goes much deeper than they ever expected.

Book Title: Vérité
Genre: Sports Romance
Length: 243 pages

Synopsis

That’s me—Tingly Simmons—athlete, foreign-language major, professor lover, obsessed idiot girl. Definitely not a frat rat or sorority slut. I’ve never even played beer pong.

I ditched the vapid, soulless high-society life of Los Angeles for the promise of something more meaningful in rural Ohio. Accepting a track scholarship for college, I tried running my way to happiness, but instead I ended up sleeping with my French professor and falling head over heels for him.

When that relationship fell apart, so did I.

Barely hanging on by a thread and using the most absurd coping skills, I was determined to hide behind my past indiscretions. That was, until I met Tiberius Jones. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d learn the truth about love from a six-foot-five basketball player.
