Author: Jewel E. Ann
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Length: 424 pages
Rating: 4 stars

Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; in the sure and certain hope of the Resurrection to eternal life.

Four caskets. Two bodies.

Jessica and Jude Day witness their funeral and that of their parents a few yards away from mourning family and friends. Stripped of the only life they’ve ever known, the Days say goodbye to San Francisco forever.

Four months later, two thirty-year-old misfits with elite self-defense skills and penchants for alcohol, sex, and trouble arrive like an earthquake to Peaceful Woods, a retirement community in Omaha, Nebraska, that thrives on rules and gossip. Welcome home, Jackson and Jillian Knight.

Jackson celebrates his new beginning by embracing his job and wiping his cavalier past clean with a temporary oath of celibacy. But Jillian’s past is branded into her soul—the deaths, the insanity, Dr. Luke Jones, and the need to make her lovers bleed. Her chance for redemption comes in the form of a next door neighbor, one Senior Master Sergeant Monaghan. He’s sexy, dangerously alluring, and riddled with emotional issues from years of service. He’s also … So. Damn. Grumpy.

Their mission is simple: Let go, start over, don’t kill anyone, and pray that nobody wakes the dead.

Grace Review
A complex story about starting over, creating a new life, and trying to forget the past.

Going into this book, I had no idea what to expect. Hell, based on the synopsis, I thought it would be paranormal. If you wondered the same, it is not. This book definitely has a lot a mystery and it is clear early on that female character has some major issues, specifically with blood, but again, not paranormal. I get back to the blood thing later.

The title of the book is a play on the sister and brother’s last name, Day. Based on unknown circumstances, they are forced to start new lives, under new names and personalities. Hence the end of Day, and beginning of Knight (their new last name). Clever, right? These odd twins take it a step further, changing their names from Jude and Jessica to Jackson and Jillian (Jack and Jill).

The story is told in the third person, mostly from the sister’s perspective, in the present as Jillian Knight, and in the past as Jessica Day. Adding to the complexity, there are two men, AJ in the present, Luke in the past. It’s not really a love triangle per se, but it will give you the same conflicting feelings as a love triangle gives. Who was/is the right guy?

It’s ironic given his profession as a psychiatrist, that Luke plays a lot of mind games with Jessica. Starting out as her doctor, their relationship evolves into an odd friendship with a whole lot of sexual tension. Jessica is pretty blunt and states her desires fairly early on. And what does Luke think? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  I had no fucking clue. Eventually, you see how he feels, but due to his profession and her issues, tries to distance himself. Given that Jillian can’t seem to forget Luke in the present, it was clear there something special was there, it just took awhile in the story for us to see that special.

I was the best possible version of myself with Luke.

And then their is the grumpy military man, AJ aka Senior Master Sergeant, her neighbor. He and Jillian are an accident waiting to happen. Their intensity is off the charts, but not always in a good way. With her sleeping issues and his PTSD issues, which seem to create an alternate personality within him, there is a high probability things could go very wrong for them very quickly, with her sending him to the hospital once already. Despite all that and Jillian’s longing for Luke, I felt like AJ was a better match for her. How they can work to help each other will determine whether they can last.

Jillian was either fearless or scared to the point of ruthless insanity.  Either way, AJ wanted nothing more than to exhale . . . relinquish control, and let her see the monster inside.  Beat him, break him, destroy him, and maybe in the wreakage find the man he used to be.

There is an optional cliffhanger in this book. It’s truly up to you to decide how you want to wait for the next book, on a happy note or something else? I personally was too curious to pass it up. My thoughts . . . will be kept to myself, don’t want to spoil anything for you.

Jessica/Jillian’s interest in blood is very bizarre. I’m not 100% certain when it started, but it seems to stem from a traumatic incident she suffered as a teenager. Her need to draw blood goes much deeper than a playful bite, she literally seems to want to suck blood, joking that she’s a vampire. I did not understand this AT ALL. I’m hoping for a clearer understanding in the next book.

Jillian shrugged as her eyes focused on his lips.  But she didn’t crave their warmth or the feel of them against hers; she craved the mettallic taste that would bleed from them.

At the end of this book, I have a ton of questions. Several of those questions are in regards to Jessica/Jillian’s relationships and where they led/will lead. But my biggest question is about their need to change identities. We find out why they are so skilled, but still don’t know what happened to the parents. I also have this weird feeling that the past and present will come together and if so, that’s going to be very emotional.

Compared to the author’s other books, this book was on the milder side as far as angst (previous books of hers have almost made me mental with stress). In place of the angst is a whole lot of questions, as I tried to understand Jillian/Jessica better. I do think with my theory, there is the potential for some serious angst in the next book. But we’ll have to wait and see.

“Have you ever killed anyone?”

Jessica’s smile slipped. “If I told you then I’d have to kill you.”

      “So you’re a secret agent?”

She flipped onto her stomach, resting her chin on her crossed arms. “If I said yes then it would no longer be a secret. Come on, Jones, you’re losing your focus. Don’t let me feel smarter than you or our time together will be over and I rather like hanging out here.”

      “Luke,” he corrected.

“I mean it!” Luke showed another rare moment of teetering emotion.

Jessica chuckled. “What are the chances of us having sex? I’ve never done it missionary, but you could possibly counsel me through it.”

He refocused on his crossword puzzle, filling in a word in pen. “Less than zero percent.”

“So, not in my favor, eh?

      “Why not missionary?”

Jessica smiled in delight that Luke continued with the topic of conversation. “I’m sure you already know, but if you want me to say I need control, then sure, I need control. But the truth is I’d control any sex position you want to put me in.” Jessica winked as Luke gave her a fleeting glance. “I just don’t want you thinking you have control, even if I know it’s not the case. Pisses me off to see the smirk on a guy’s face when he thinks he has control.”

“Tell me why you need control.” Luke continued with his crossword.

      “In bed?”

      “Someone has to have it.”

      “Because someone initiates it.”

“So if I initiate sex with you will I have control?”

“There’s only one way to find out.” Jessica wiggled her eyebrows at an ill-humored Luke.
