New Release (Book Review): Fates Divided by Jules Barnard

Title: Fates Divided  (Halven Rising #1)
Author: Jules Barnard
Genre: Paranormal, Romance
Length: 359 pages
Rating: 3.5 stars

Synopsis

Elena Rosales has busted her ass to get into a good college. She’s the only one in her family ever to attend, and expectations are high. No pressure. But Elena’s got this one in the bag, because she’s as dependable as the molecules she studies, as reliable as the chemical reactions that comfort her in their predictability. Until they don’t.

Elena has always wondered why her mother abandoned her on her first birthday. It’s not until she turns eighteen and her chemistry experiments go berserk that she learns the truth: Her mother wasn’t human, and the Fae are willing to harm those Elena loves if she doesn’t use her power over the elements to cure them of a deadly disease.

Derek, Elena’s brooding neighbor, isn’t the friendliest guy, but he has access to an off-hours lab and is willing to help Elena create the antivirus. He has his own secrets to keep, and this business Elena is mixed up in could blow his cover. But when Elena and Derek get together, more than chemicals spark fire—and they soon discover just how complicated attraction can get when they find themselves on the other side of the portal, fighting for survival. Lives collide, and allegiance and love are tested, in Fates Divided.

—–

In the Halven Rising Series, love and ancient allegiances are threatened when the worlds of Fae and Halven collide. Each Halven Rising novel features a different couple and may be read as a standalone, but an overreaching story arc connects the books, so it’s fun to read them in order.

description

The Good: What drew me to the book from jump was the heroine, Elena Rosales. I loved that Elena’s half Mexican, half Fae and that it’s part of her narrative, but not THE story. As the book went along, the romance between Derek and Elena does a good job of grounding the fantastical elements of the story.

Overall, the story skewed young to me, with Elena just turning eighteen and coming into this crazy power to manipulate liquids and transmutation of elements. It’s very scientific at times, as there’s a Fae superbug that’s wiping them out quickly, and it’s a race against time to find the cure. I will say though that it’s not strictly young adult, as there are many, many kisses (which I enjoyed) and some love scenes that were definitely more about the romance than the down and dirty. It fit perfectly within the context of this story and I enjoyed them.

There’s alot to take in with this ‘verse, since Elena and Derek are what’s known as Halven, children born of a Fae/Human coupling. That’s a serious no-no, and the prejudice that they encounter was a good allegory to what many mixed race children have to deal with on a daily basis.

The Mostly In Between: I wouldn’t call this bad, but it is part of the prose – alot happens off-page, and because it is the first book, there’s alot of information that needs to be parsed out to the characters and the readers. I would have liked to see more happening in real time. To have seen the devastation wrought on the Fae because of this bug, to meet some characters who play integral parts of this story. Also, it felt that for such a fantastical plotline, at first Elena and Derek seemed to be isolated in laboratories and rooms alot. The most exciting scenes happen in the second half and make up for this, so I was satisfied.

The way it’s resolved felt like the majority was recapped towards the end. Since there’s a bit of an overarching storyline, it’s not surprising and I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next couple of books.

I enjoyed it. It’s a good start to a series, and I loved Derek and Elena together.  I would recommend it for YA/NA paranormal/urban fantasy romance readers.

Leah and Jagger have no problem convincing everyone at the reunion they’re together. She should’ve known better than to think there’d be no strings attached.

After all, he’s a professional.

Michelle's Review

Leah Godfrey is an interior designer, with a nice clientele, she also has a nice weekly spot on a widely watched national morning show, with a teenage daughter.  Leah finally feels she has come to being the success that she was meant to be, especially after divorcing he douche bag of a husband, whom might I add, cheated on her with her high school rival.  Her 20 year high school is upon her, and she needs a hot date ASAP.  Her BFF Kari suggested she hire a hot escort just to rub it in her husband’s face.  Although apprehensive at first, Leah decides to meet this escort and see if she can grow through this façade.

Jagger Holiday is a hot commodity when it comes to the escort business.  His true passion his photography, although it really does not help pay the bills especially since he wants open up a gallery to show his work and works of other photographers.  When his boss tells him he has yet another job for him, Jagger really did not want to go, but since he really needs the money, he decides to meet this new “desperate” woman.  After their first meeting before the reunion, Jagger decides he will attend the reunion with Leah.

The chemistry between Leah and Jagger was all consuming from the very beginning.  Jagger found himself doing things with Leah that he has never done with this other clients (no you perverts, I’m not talking about sex).  Leah makes Jagger also feel things.  Leah is very impressed with Jagger’s photography.

Once at the reunion, people are taking notice of the new Leah with the hot guy, especially her ex-husband.  Oh boy I so disliked her ex Rich.  I really wanted Leah to give him a good tongue lashing.  Although Leah and Jagger were only going to meet for the reunion, they could not deny their attraction for one another. Oh boy did the shit hit the fan at around 80%.

So here was my problem with the book.  The sexy times were really hot, like hot damn, I need a cold shower type of hot.  Although there is an HEA, it felt, to me, too open ended.  I really wanted to see how the characters were going to work through their issues, especially Jagger being an escort.  I really do not want to give too much away, but in real life, I don’t think Leah would put up with it for too long.  I really wish the author would have given me more substance towards the end.  If felt like a cliffhanger.  This is my first time reading Ms. Strassel’s work and probably will not be the last.  I hope maybe she would write a novella so I can know what happens with Leah and Jagger.

Michelle's Review

5 Butterfly Stars

As I am typing this review tears are still rolling down my face. I was introduced to M. Stratton (or Michele with one L, as I like to call her) by my fellow blogger, Yaya, last year. If you have read any of
Michele’s other books, well you are in for a surprise with a 120 Days. She can write a romantic suspense which will have you on the edge, or she can write a sweet contemporary series like The Star Series, For 120 Days she will not only make you grab a box of tissues, but will make you see life in a whole new perspective.

If you have read the synopsis, you already know this is a book about cancer, yet there is also a love story, but I am jumping ahead. Ethan McGregor is a real estate developer and his purpose in life is to make the next investment, well that is until his younger brother drops by and turns Ethan’s world upside down. Evan shows up to tell Ethan that he is dying and only has a few weeks to live. Basically, he was saying goodbye to Ethan. Evan’s last wish is for Ethan not to find him, to let him die with dignity. Ethan raised Evan after losing their
parents, he basically put his life on hold to make sure Evan would grow up in a home.
After Ethan’s brother passes away, he leaves him with his journal

about his time at Last Resort. Ethan wants to see the place where his brother spent his dying days. He also wanted to see first-hand if Last Resort was a good place or a place where the owner may be scamming the dying. Yup, Ethan was an asshole, at first.

Little did Ethan know that Samantha Truman not only ran a beautiful facility where those who came to live out they dying days, but would make sure they did it with lots of activities and most of all love.  Sam, as everyone called her, lost both of her parents to cancer. She wanted her guests to live out their dying days with fun and laughter.

Ethan shows up at Last Resort to work with ulterior motives, but once he sees for himself how truly happy the guest are and most of all, how truly devoted Sam is to Last Resort, his tune changes very quickly. Throughout his time there, he reads his brother’s journal which also helps him more motivated in trying to help Sam with Last Resort. Never would Ethan would have expected to fall in love either. I could go on describing this beautifully written story Michele wrote, but I want you to experience it for yourself. I would suggest you read in the privacy of your home because the tears will come and it will come in abundance. Towards the end, I had to message the author crying my eyes out.

This book made me think of my other whom I lost three years ago to pancreatic cancer. They did not give her much time, but her determination and perseverance had her living two more years from when she was diagnosed. My mother died a week after my daughter’s first communion. The day after my daughter’s communion, she asked me to put her in hospice. The last two days on this earth, my mother was surrounded by many family and friends. I saw my mother take her last breath while I held her hand.

Michele, thank you for this beautiful tribute to your parents. I pray that they are with you for many more years to come. It truly was an honor to read this book.

Grace Review

A series finale that was tailored for the true Kristen Ashley fan.  This book will hit on everything you love about the author and leaving you wiping away endless tears (if you’re a sap like me).

Going into the final book of this beloved book series is not easy.  As you may have noticed, I have been binging on the ‘Burg series this summer.  All of the previous books I listened to on audio since I knew that I’d never have the reading time to read all 5 books, and I love KA’s narrators.  This was the first book of the series I read, instead of listened to, and it’s one of those books that I delayed reading because I didn’t want it to end.  As a huge KA fan, can you believe I had this book on my kindle for a month?!  Aside than having other ARC obligations, I simply didn’t want to say goodbye.

A Sweet and Sexy Love Story
Everyone in this series has had their difficult moments along the way.  Whether it is being hurt by a serial killer, a love lost, or fighting judements, they all struggled in their own way.  And then there is Cheryl “Cher” who seemed to have ALL of the previously mentioned problems.  But she’s a guy’s gal.  She’s build up a hard wall to protect herself.  She doesn’t cry.  She rolls with the punches.  Her only weakness, falling for a man who loved someone else.

If you read The Promise, then you know how Benny Bianchi saw what others couldn’t. And he laid down excellent advice for Cher to find some happy in her life, outside of her son, Ethan. Cher being Cher, she never wanted to expose her emotions and risk the rejection from someone she called a friend.  But one drunken night, she lays out her own brand of knowledge to Merry, and it makes all the difference.

There were many times during this story that I worried about the building relationship between Cher and Merry.  However, if you know the author, she doesn’t make you suffer too long when the characters act like asshats.  And both Cher and Merry have their moments.  Cher’s lack of relationship skills and overreaction, came to play often. Sometimes these moments bite her in the ass, sometimes Merry overlooks him.

“No one can show you happy, Cher, unless you let them in to try.”

As for Merry, just like his sister, Rocky, he continues to struggle with the loss of his mother. He too screws up on occasion, but Cher quickly learns that in order to get her happy, she needs to fight for it.  And that makes her stand out from all the women who came before her.  Especially Mia, but I’ll get to her later.

When the two of them sort their shit, the magic happens. *smirks*

“Just so we’re clear, good girls get good things, Cher.  Bad girls get punished.”
I was so going to be bad with Merry.

The Definition of a Perfect Child
Whatever words I can think up to express how amazing Ethan is, they won’t be enough. Whether it was his acceptance of Merry into their lives, or defending his Mom against his Dad and nutso Step-Mom, this kid has knowledge beyond his years.  I adored how he encouraged his Mom’s relationship and just wanted her to find happy.

The love Ethan and Cher have for one another was simply beautiful.  And Merry feeds off that love, seeing something he wants to be part of, beyond the obligations of a boyfriend.

As I mentioned on Facebook, the author’s inclusion of kids in her stories, is truly special.

1h

Endless Villians
Reading Golden Trail, I got the impression that his ex, Mia, was this amazing woman.  Everyone seemed to think he needed to get back with her and make things right.  So this being Merry and Cher’s story, not Merry and Mia’s, I had to wonder what went down to make him see potential in another woman.  Without giving away the who’s and why’s:

– Mia is a bitch
– Cher opens Merry’s eyes to something he never considered.
– Mia is a bitch.
– For the first time, Merry can’t get a woman out of his head, and it is not Mia.
– Mia is a bitch.

Are you cluing in here?  Part of me, a VERY small part, felt sorry for her.  But Mia goes about things all wrong, like BUY A CLUE wrong!

But Mia isn’t the only villian in this book.  There’s the previously mentioned, weirdo Step-Mom, Peggy, Cher’s neighbor, and a persistant wanna-be author.  Each villian threatens the future for Cher and Merry, and it’s how the couple weathers those threats that bring them to the next level.

Humor among the drama
One of the qualities Merry always liked about Cher was her ability to make jokes, even at her own expense.  She doesn’t disappoint to lighten up a heavy mood in this story.

“You can stop being perfect.  I’m getting a complex.”

1m

And along the way, maybe Merry picked up some of that same humor:
“You should be a therapist, Mike.  Open your own clinic.  Call it ‘Don’t be a Dumb Fuck Treatment Center.'”

“You opened your eyes and looked ready to perform surgery, shake a martini, or ride my cock until we both found it, all a’ that with a camera crew in tow, ready for your close-up.”

The Epilogue to End all Epilogues
Another reader warned me about this ending.  And I still didn’t see it coming.  All I can say is have tissues on standby.  I started and stopped crying four times.  Yes 1,2, 3, 4 times!!!  As I said before, I’m a sap.  But as the author closes up each story from the series, the simpliest of moments will start the waterworks.  I finished this book with a pile of used tissues beside me, and a huge grin on my face.  I’ve said my goodbyes to the group, but this series will definitley be one I will reread in the future.

“You got good, you don’t let go.  It lets you go, you hold on.  It slips through your fingsers, you pull out all the stops to get it back.  You got somethin’ worth fighting for, you fight for it.”

– Grace

Excerpt

Through this, my leg hit an end table and I adjusted. We cleared the couch, I shifted again too soon, both my calves hit the coffee table, and my ass went down on it.

I looked up. Cell flat to the table, I braced my hands to push up, but Merry was there, chin in his throat, eyes on me, and when he spoke again, his mind was clearly on my location.

“Tried to get your mouth on me more than once when we tore at each other up last Friday, but I was in the mood to use mine. Lookin’ forward to learnin’ what you can do with yours, but like I said, baby, right now, don’t got the time.”

My only response that he couldn’t twist was to glare at him, which was what I did.

“But got time before I go for a kiss,” Merry informed me.

“Only kiss I’ll give you is tellin’ you to kiss off,” I informed him.

“Who knew warm brown eyes like the ones you got could spark that kind of fire,” he muttered as if he wasn’t even talking to me.

“Step back,” I demanded.

“No,” he denied.

I continued to glare up at him, then I realized I was not the kind of woman who sat on her ass, glaring up at a man towering over her and pinning her in. So I stood, which put me smack in Merry’s space, my breasts brushing against his abs and up his chest on my way.

They kept brushing when he didn’t move back, but I didn’t attempt escape, even to get away from the shafts of electricity this all caused at my nipples, shafts that headed south.

I glared at him from closer.

He stared into my eyes, his gaze moving down to my mouth then back up as one side of his lips curved.

He was getting off on this.

I didn’t get that and I didn’t want to get that.

I wanted this done.

“In the mood to play, Officer?” I whispered.

“Told you, sweetheart, don’t got the time.”

I shook my head but held his gaze. “Not what I mean. Single mom, all alone. Switch out her storms. Offer info to help her out of a jam. Been a while since I was in the know about these things, so tell me, what’s the price for all that? You mentioned a blowjob. You got stamina, but I got talent. Balance that out, I’m thinkin’ it’ll take more than the usual ten, fifteen minutes. We’ll give it twenty. So I can manage my time, is there more?”

I wasn’t even done talking before I learned his eyes could spark fire too.

I also learned he was in the mood to play, that being, playing me at my own game.

And doing it better.

He dipped his face close, his voice low. “Storms get me the blowjob, brown eyes. I get the intel you need, that buys me sinkin’ deep in wet pussy.”

I felt my nipples get harder at the same time something else happened to me that, if he was of a mind to take his payoff right then, he’d get what he wanted.

I hid this reaction and asked, “You want this all in one go, or you wanna spread payback out for a while?”

“Keep plenty of time open, Cher. I intend to earn a fuckuva lot more and draw it out collecting.”

I nodded, still keeping a lock on his eyes. “I get it. Girl like me, only payback expected for me to be able to give.”

That didn’t get me fire.

That got me ice.

“I hear you talk down about yourself one more time, Cher, shit will get extreme.”

That made me ice over.

“Do not hand me that crap, Merry. You come into my home and got no problem talkin’ about wet pussy right to my face tells me the woman you know me to be.”

He dipped his face even closer, to the point it felt like if I blinked, my lashes would sweep his in a butterfly kiss.

“Do not hand me your shit, Cher,” he growled. “That hang-up is yours, not mine. And how I know that is I made you come just finger fuckin’ you and talkin’ dirty in your ear, and it was the talk and not what my fingers were doin’ that took you there. I like that, a woman who can let go and let me give her that without gettin’ uptight and closin’ down on me. You liked it too, a fuckuva lot more than me. So don’t stand there handin’ me your shit when I know you’re wet for me now and I haven’t fuckin’ touched you.”

I refused to reply to that because he was right and I had no intention of confirming that information.

But it was then he hit me with a verbal blow, the intensity of which, not in my whole shitty- ass life I’d ever received.

“Christ, if I didn’t know you were worth it, I’d walk out the door and this would be done—all we got, over.”

I could stand.

I could stare.

But I couldn’t breathe.

Merry could.

He could also speak.

“Hope like fuck no one takes off with those storms while I’m gone. You think they will, move ’em into garage and leave the key under the mat. I’m switchin’ ’em out, Cher. I come back tonight and they’re done, I’ll find you, and I won’t be collectin’. I’ll be dishin’ it out, but you won’t get it until you beg for it and do that shit for a really long time.”

His words were lost on me.

I continued to stand.

I continued to stare.

But my lungs had started burning.

If I didn’t know you were worth it…

“When’s Ethan’s next sleepover?” Merry bit out.

“Friday,” I whispered. “But his friend’s comin’ here.”

“Fuck,” Merry clipped. “Find a time, babe. You don’t, payback’ll stack up and I’ll have to take personal days and hole up in a hotel with you for a week. And there’s not a doubt that stick- up-her-ass church lady your ex tied his shit to won’t appreciate you bein’ gone from your kid for a weeklong fuckathon.”

That was kind of funny as well as hot.

I still said nothing.

Merry fell silent and stared at me.

Then he dealt the second biggest verbal blow I’d ever received in my life.

“Christ, you’re pretty, even standin’ there plotting my murder.”

After that, he lifted a hand, grabbed me gentle but firm at my neck, yanked me up so my mouth hit his hard but brief, then he let me go.

“Later, babe,” he said, strolling to my door. He stopped in it, turned to me, and bid his

farewell by saying, “You touch those storms only to put them in the garage.”

He closed the door on that.

I stood where he left me.

If I didn’t know you were worth it…

What was I worth?

What was I worth to Merry?

Oblivion is a sweet, sweet place.

No pain. No disturbing thoughts of the past. No guilt from my recent actions.

Deep down, there is still a part of me that knows how screwed up I am. I don’t see a way out, not now. Tria’s gone, and the possibility of her forgiving me in my current state is exactly zero. I know I have to pull myself together, accept my responsibilities, and try to make amends, but I have no idea where to start.

No job. No apartment. I’m living on the streets with the other junkies. As little as I had to offer Tria before, I have nothing to give her now. The only way out is to come clean and tell Tria the truth about my past, but the idea of reliving the memories is so painful, I can’t think about it long enough to figure out a solution.

I’ve hit rock bottom, and I don’t even know which way is up any more.

Grace Review

This culmination of the trilogy shows how someone who hits rock bottom, finds the strength to pull themselves together a build a better life.  This author takes Liam down a dark path, one he’s known before.  With EVERYTHING taken from him, you feel the resolve it takes for him to do the right thing.

Liam’s path back to the light isn’t easy. He fights temptations daily.  He struggles through painful memories.  Yet, with the promise to do right by Tria and their baby, he battles his demons every step of the way.  The biggest being his revelation of what happened to him as a teenager.  It was pretty clear what had happened, but now we get every horrific detail and how actions by others, led him down the destructive path.

I was starting to feel like Dexter.  Sixteen days, nine hours, and forty-two minutes since I last kicked the shit aout of someone.

What I liked most about this book was how Liam made personal sacrifices to create the right life for his love(s).  He had opportunities to take his fighting career further, but his sole goal is to be there for his growing family.

The biggest surprise for me in this book was that Liam’s parents weren’t evil like I pictured them to be.  With little revelations, we see how they tried to make up for their mistakes.  And we see how deep their love is for Liam.  I was shocked by their own personal heartbreak, and actually felt bad for them.  Liam doesn’t make things easy for them, AT ALL.  But they never give up on him.  And they never walked away.

“I lost the only thing I ever made that meant anything.”

On top of that  surprise, I was not happy with Yolanda.  I never really understood her story, and we get some of it.  But I didn’t get how she gave up on Liam in every sense of the word.  I can’t relate to how hard it would be to help an addict, but given some light shed on her, I couldn’t comprehend why she couldn’t help him anymore.  And her actions nearly cause his end, which can’t be forgiven.  Later, biatch!

With Liam’s personal struggle and growth, Tria benefits from his new life focus.  She becomes his biggest supporter, encouraging to stay with the therapy he desperately needed, and she helps to bridge the gap between him and his family.  The love the build together, supporting one another with each step, was very sweet.

Of the three books, this was definitely the most emotional one, as Liam’s vulnerabilities are completely exposed.  His emotions were raw, and while he could be an jerk to those around him, most gave him a pass, knowing how hard he was trying.  With every page, I felt like Liam’s personal cheerleader, wanting him to do right and find happiness.  This book ties up loose ends and leaves Liam in a place, that was long overdue.  A happy place.

I embraced my destiny.

I reached out and touched the edge of the pillow.  It was insanely soft and warm.  I stroked it, and images of Tria’s breasts crawled through my head, making me smile.  I stroked my cock as I thought about her, but I couldn’t come.

I could hear a voice in the other room, but it didn’t concern me, so I didn’t move.  Through heavy eyelids, I watched the piles of dirty laundry all over the floor.  I found shapes of animals in the patterns, just like cloud pictures.

“The beans are gone.”

I rolled my head to the side and looked up at Krazy Katie’s face.  I smiled and tried to say something, but my tongue wasn’t cooperating.  I focused on her eyes as they stared down at me quizzically.

“Trains need an engineer,” Krazy Katie said.

“It’s okay,” I said.  My tongue still felt weird, all numb and heavy.  I twisted it around in my mouth, and it tickled my teeth.  I blinked a couple of times before looking back at my neighbor.  “I got the helm.  I’m all good.”

Did trains have a helm, or was that just boats?  I laughed.

Krazy Katie covered her eyes with one hand.  I could see her chest rising and falling as she took long breaths.  I started counting slowly in my head but quickly forgot the number.

“Left the station,” she said quietly.  “No engineer.  Kicked in the caboose.  Nothing but tracks.”

She turned in slow motion, and I watched vapor trails of her dull blue T-shirt swirl around the room as she left.  I heard the window slide shut and then silence.

“I’m all good,” I whispered.

There was no reply.

Even though my arms and legs were way too content to be bothered with moving, I shoved myself out of bed anyway.  My rig was sitting on the kitchen table, all ready to go.  I was still pretty high, but I could feel darkness closing in around me, and I didn’t want it.

I wanted warmth and happiness.

Plastic tube, arm slap, needle prick.

“Like a fucking pro.”

I lay my head on the table as the fluid sensations rippled through me.  Tria didn’t matter.  She’d forgive me in time.  In fact, she was probably already over it.  How could she not be?

“I’m good.  Really, I am.”

I was never one to lie to myself, but it was getting easier all the time.

Release Blitz (Book Review, Excerpt & Giveaway): Not Another Romance by Lisa Suzanne

Title: Not Just Another Romance Novel
Author: Lisa Suzanne
Genre: New Adult/Romantic Comedy
Release Date: August 27, 2015
Rating: 3 stars
Synopsis

Is it really wrong to have more than one boyfriend?I brought a new one into my bed almost every night.

From conference rooms to broom closets, I escaped reality with my leading men. Okay, so they were fictional book boyfriends.

In reality I should have been concentrating on classes while I looked for a living, breathing man to help me achieve my romantic fantasies. It was a friend who suggested combining my passions for romance novels and psychology to generate my Master’s thesis research topic: Does the modern day romance novel leading man create unrealistic expectations for a prolonged adult relationship?

To find out, I’d run a social experiment. I’d be the constant. The variables would be my leading men. I’d date every stereotype in the books, from billionaires to bad boys, rock stars to bikers, dominants, athletes, and…my stepbrother?

If my research was successful, I’d end up with a degree and maybe even my very own happy ending.

description

Love the premise: What happens when you decide to examine male stereotypes in romance novels, by actually dating each of the stereotypes? That’s what Piper decides to make the basis of her master’s thesis in psychology and I was drawn in from jump. I loved the idea of meeting real life counterparts for classic book boyfriends such as the bad boy, the rocker, the DILF, the billionaire CEO, etc. Even more fun was seeing the heroine realize that some book boyfriends, should stay just that – in your book, not real life. It’s all in first person POV, and it’s more chick lit than straight romance, if that’s your gig.

Some good humor: Alot of the humor comes from her misadventures with the romance novel dates, but it never crosses over into outright slapstick which I enjoyed.

The dreaded T word: yep, you guessed it – the romantic triangle. If there was something that brought down my enjoyment, and my rating, is that the dreaded T makes an appearance, plus things progress very far on both sides of the triangle. Trying to look past my personal bias against it, I think it was done in a way that made both sides of the triangle sympathetic, even if it’s clear who she should ultimately be with. Had it not progressed as far on both sides, I probably could have enjoyed it more. Also, all the characters are pretty young and act accordingly, so there’s some drama and some emotional angst that comes from that lack of maturity when you’re in your early twenties.

The Bottom Line

I liked it and I think the idea was fresh, even if I had issues with the triangle. I will definitely keep an eye out for more from this author.

“What’s that?” Austin asked, snatching my list out of Shannon’s hand. “The list for my research project. Do you know any men who fit my criteria?” I asked.

He studied the list for a moment before handing it back to me. “I know a few.”

Six eyes turned to Austin. “Who?” I asked.

“I know a rock star. Well, kind of. He sings for a local band, but they’ve got a great following. I know several businessmen, but not any CEOs. I might be able to hook you up with one, though. And I know a few bars around here where your bad boys hang out.”

My jaw dropped. Everyone has that one friend who knows everybody. Austin had lived in San Diego his entire life, so he knew the lay of the land.

“Take me to your bars!” I practically yelled, garnering a glare from students studying nearby. “Sorry,” I whispered.

“Wait a minute,” Shannon said. “I thought of a few you’re missing from your list.”

A few I was missing? I thought I’d pretty much covered all the bases. “Who?”

“You need a Fabio.” She stated it like it was obvious.

“Like a cover model?” I asked.

She shrugged. “Sure. Or like a historical romance guy.”

I laughed. Shannon could be a bit of an airhead sometimes. “Where am I going to find a historical romance guy? We’re in the present tense, Shannon.”

“Duh. Renaissance Festival. And Austin, you seem to know everybody else. Do you know any vampires?”

Laughter bubbled up from my chest. I couldn’t help when it spilled out, and when I looked over at Austin and Scott, I found a similar reaction. Shannon stared at us blankly.

“What?” she asked.

“Vampires?” I asked through my giggles.

“They’re in all the books,” she clarified, only spurring on our laughter. Her brows came together in anger.

My giggles turned into those silent quaking convulsions that I couldn’t possibly control. Scott was holding up his hand as if to tell Shannon to stop while he laughed, and Austin clutched his stomach from the hilarity.

We’d stop for a minute only to glance at one or the other, and then we’d start back up again, garnering more glares from students near us.

Our laughing had to have gone on for at least a full five minutes before we were composed enough to talk about it.

“What?” Shannon finally asked in frustration.

Austin gave Shannon a very serious look while I stifled another wave of giggles. Scott had to excuse himself after a less than flattering snort.

“Vampires aren’t real,” Austin finally said.

“Well, you need a paranormal,” Shannon said, her voice both irritated and completely serious. “How about a werewolf?”

After that comment, it was my turn to excuse myself after a less than flattering snort.

About

CD Reiss is a USA Today and Amazon bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up, she’s at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did embed TV story structure in her head well enough for her to take a big risk on a TV series structured erotic series called Songs of Submission. It’s about a kinky billionaire hung up on his ex-wife, an ingenue singer with a wisecracking mouth; art, music and sin in the city of Los Angeles.

Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to give the toilets a once-over every couple of weeks or chop a cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Grace Review

Another manwhore goes down!  Book two in this series features Gabe, one of the three rich Slutketeers.

In book one, Shep found his match and quickly gave up one-night stands for Jade.  When summer arrives, Gabe is bored out of his mind at his parents house, but at least he has a nice view.  That would be his neighbor Lucy.

Stunned that the beautiful man is interested in her, she doesn’t correct him when he assumes she’s a rich Daddy’s girl.  While Gabe initially only wants Lucy to provide some summer fun to the slow days, the connection between them proves deeper each time they are apart.  And the two play a bit of a cat and mouse game.

As the synopsis mentions, Lucy carries her lie with her when they reconnect at college (this would be an example where maybe too much is revealed in the synopsis, taking away the element of surprise).  I’m not sure why Gabe didn’t see all the obvious signs about her status, but her lack of interest in spending money was part of her appeal.

With a heroine of Mexican decent, I both liked and disliked how this book handled her diversity.  Let’s get the minus side out of the way.  This woman seemed to be the product of every bad sterotype for Hispanics – runaway Dad, poor financial status, and a Mom who is a maid.  On the plus side, I’m really glad that the author had a Mexican heroine.  They seem to be few and far between in romance books.  Also, there was very little mentioned about her race, other than her darker skin, which apparently looked like a good tan.  This book had the potential for race to be a big drama point, especially with Gabe’s parents, but nothing came of it.  Race essentially became a non-issue, which can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it.

Speaking of the Gabe’s parents, I was left scratching my head with their relationship and expectations. Gabe internal whines repeatedly about how his parents control his future, both career wise, and marriage wise.  So there was the potential for some big drama with Lucy and how she didn’t fit into his parent’s future plans.  But there really was no mention of it once things were sorted with Gabe and Lucy.

Huh?

This book had a lot of potential, but I felt like big things like race, status and family expectations were dangled in front of me and then dropped.  I did like that Gabe saw beyond all of these factors and found love when he least expected it.

Of the three guys, Tristan remains the biggest mystery, so I’m very eager to see how he falls, just like his buddies before him.

Synopsis

From the New York Times bestselling author of Stepbrother Dearest, comes a new forbidden STANDALONE romance.

What happens when the one you want is the only one you can’t have?

My name is Sevin.

Homeschooled and sheltered by my ultra-religious family, I was always taught that lust was a sin.

Elle was the girl who’d been carefully chosen for me.

After a long-distance courtship, I’d be moving into her family’s guesthouse so that we could get to know each other in the months before the wedding.

Boundaries were set: no inappropriate touching, no kissing, no sex before marriage.

I’d accepted those rules and my fate.

Until I met the one I wanted to sin with.

That was when restraint became a problem…especially since the one wasn’t Elle.

It was her sister, Evangeline.

You know what they say about best laid plans.

My name is Sevin, and I have sinned.

Told in alternating points of view, Sins of Sevin is a full-length standalone novel. Contains graphic sexual content and harsh language. Only appropriate for adult readers age 18+.
