Grace Review

Story – 3 stars
Beginning in book 1, I went against the grain and popular opinion.  I actually wanted Liz to be with Hayden.  I know I’m supposed to like Brady, and while he had his moments, I couldn’t see why anyone from Liz’s background would put up with the shit he put her through.  So your man is powerful and sexually aggressive.  But he can’t even acknowledge you in public.  EXCUSE ME?!  NO, just NO!

So yeah, that was my unpopular opinion in book 1, and I was happy as a pig in shit when my wish came true in book 2.

And then I wasn’t. But let me backtrack . . .

To be blunt, Liz didn’t deserve a guy like Hayden.  This guy did anything and everything for her.  But, everything reminded her of Brady.  The beach reminded her of Brady.  Planes reminded her of Brady.  Hayden’s birthday gift reminded her of Brady.  The hotel reminded her of Brady. Brady, Brady, Brady.  Blah, blah, blah.  Shoot me now!

If you are a Brady fan, parts of this book will frustrate you too.  Because two thirds of the book are about Hayden.  Even if her heart isn’t always there, she commits to Hayden.  Love, eventually follows.  So I should be happy, right?  No!

With a quick taps of her keyboard, the author quickly makes me dislike Hayden and lose trust in him.  Space and jealously between Hayden and Liz further drives a wedge between them.  One phone call later to guess who, and everything changes.

While his moments are few and far between, Brady was a jerk through a good part of the book.  This again makes me question, why does everyone like this guy so much?  BUT, before you bring pitchforks to my house, I did have a change of heart about him towards the end of the book.  Brady finally shows how much Liz means to him, and that’s really all it takes to sway my opinion of him.

Performance – 5 stars
There are audio books where the narrator can make a good story worse.
And there are audio books where the narrator can make an ok story better.

To say this narrator (Natalie Ross) is the latter, isn’t saying enough. She was phenomenal.

If I had read this story rather than listen to it on audio, there is a good chance I would have driven my car over my kindle.  But this narrator, with her soothing voice, and depth of emotion, not only kept me from jumping a bridge, but had a calming effect upon me.

The captured Liz’s anxiety and passion, Victoria’s sassiness, and the Southern sweet talking charm of the men.

Overall – 4 stars
As maddening as this series can be, am I going to read For the Record, the final book?  Hell yeah!

Yes, I may be a glutton for punishment, but I need to see this drama come to a happy end.  I feel I deserve that.  However, I can almost predict the drama that will come their way – hopefully the author finds a way to make it not so predictable.  I just know it’s gonna get ugly, before it gets beautiful.  Fingers crossed they have the same narrator for the next book, I know she can carry me thru the drama (yes, I will be doing the audio again for the last book).

While this series has been frustrating at times for me, I do really enjoy the political/reporter aspect of the story, which is strangely a rare theme in romance books.

With this series, the author keeps her crown as the Queen of Angst.  If you can handle a heavy dose of that, this series may be for you.
